Synopsis:  Seizure training requirements. Provides that school
corporations and charter schools shall require all applicants for
employment and school employees who will have direct, ongoing
contact with children within the scope of the applicant's or school
employee's employment to attend training concerning recognition of
the signs and symptoms of seizures and the appropriate steps to be
taken to respond to these symptoms.
Effective:  July 1, 2025.

SENATE BILL No. 167
A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
education.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1 SECTION 1. IC 20-28-3-9.5 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
2 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
3 1, 2025]: Sec. 9.5. (a) Each school corporation and charter school
4 shall require all applicants for employment who will have direct,
5 ongoing contact with children within the scope of the applicant's
6 employment to attend, before or not later than thirty (30) days
7 after the start date of the applicant's employment, training
8 concerning recognition of the signs and symptoms of seizures and
9 the appropriate steps to be taken to respond to these symptoms.
10 (b) Each school corporation and charter school shall require all
11 school employees who have direct, ongoing contact with children
12 within the scope of the employee's employment to attend the
13 training described in subsection (a) annually.
14 (c) The format of the training required under this section may
15 include:
16 (1) an in-person presentation;
17 (2) an electronic or technology based medium, including

1 self-review modules available on an online system;
2 (3) an individual program of study designated materials; or
3 (4) any other method approved by the governing body of a
4 school corporation or the equivalent authority of a charter
5 school that is consistent with current professional
6 development standards.
7 (d) The training required under this section for a school
8 employee must be during the school employee's contracted day or
9 at a time chosen by the employee.
10 (e) The training required under this section shall count toward
11 the requirements for professional development required by the
12 governing body of a school corporation or the equivalent authority
13 of a charter school.
14 (f) The training provided under this section must be consistent
15 with the training programs and guidelines developed by the
16 Epilepsy Foundation of America or a successor organization.
