YODER , read first time and referred to Committee on 2025 DC 1900/DI tg Introduced First Regular Session 124th General Assembly (2025) SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. _____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing the life 2 of Bloomington High School North Band Director, Janis 3 Stockhouse. 4 Whereas, Janis Stockhouse was a music educator, director, 5 and mentor in the Bloomington music community. Janis served 6 for 38 years as Bloomington High School North's band director 7 and she was a devoted educator who inspired hundreds of 8 students and instructors; 9 Whereas, Janis was a pioneer in a field traditionally 10 dominated by men and was a member of the first class of 11 Indiana University's Marching Hundred to admit women in 12 1973. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from 13 the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1977; 14 Whereas, Janis earned multiple accolades throughout her 15 career and in retirement, including the Bloomington Area Arts 16 Council's Educator of the Year in 2005, Phi Beta Mu Gamma 17 Chapter's Outstanding Bandmaster Award in 2007 and the 18 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic's Medal of 19 Honor Award in 2021, as well as being recognized in 2015 as 20 a "jazz hero" by the Jazz Education Network and as the David 21 Baker Indiana Jazz Educator of the year in 2016, 22 Whereas, Coming to Bloomington High School North in 23 1981, Janis was a trailblazer as a female high school band 24 director and turned the band into a nationally recognized 25 program, possibly contributing more students to the Indiana 2025 DC 1900/DI tg 2 1 University Jacobs School of Music than any other high school 2 in the country; 3 Whereas, Upon retiring from Bloomington North High 4 School, Janis remained an active presence in the local 5 community and music scene as an instructor at the Monroe 6 County Community School Corporation's Beginning Band 7 Program; and 8 Whereas, Janis was humble and selfless, always turning 9 the attention away from herself and onto her students. Janis 10 was a great band director, model educator, and excellent 11 community member and she will be fondly remembered by all 12 those who have had the privilege of knowing her: Therefore, 13 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly 14 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives 15 concurring: 16 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the 17 life of Janis Stockhouse and her service to our community and 18 students. 19 SECTION 2.
