SC 12—RC 1507/DI JR March 10, 2025 First Regular Session 124th General Assembly (2025) SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. 12 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana 2 Department of Transportation to rename a section of SR 114 the 3 "Captain Matthew Tomkiewicz Memorial Mile". 4 Whereas, Captain Matthew Tomkiewicz was born June 20, 5 1994, to Tracy and Lisa Tomkiewicz; 6 Whereas, Captain Tomkiewicz was a 2012 graduate of 7 Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana; 8 Whereas, Following graduation, he continued studies at 9 Purdue University, where he was involved with the Alpha Tau 10 Omega fraternity, and graduated in 2016 with a degree in 11 Aviation from Purdue Polytechnic Institute; 12 Whereas, In 2015, Captain Tomkiewicz joined the Marine 13 Corps and began flight school in Pensacola, Florida, where he 14 flew the T-6B, then moved to Milton, Florida, and flew the TH- 15 57B/C, then moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, to fly the T-44C, 16 where he was officially designated as a Naval Aviator in May 17 of 2019 and was selected to begin the MV-22B pipeline; 18 19 Whereas, Following his winging, he checked into VMMT- 20 204 for initial Osprey training in Jacksonville, North Carolina, 21 where he simultaneously attended and graduated from Survival, 22 Evasion, Resistance, and Escape school; 23 Whereas, Then Lieutenant Tomkiewicz was promoted to 24 Captain in November of 2020; SC 12—RC 1507/DI JR 2 1 Whereas, In March of 2021, Captain Tomkiewicz deployed 2 to Moron, Spain, in support of the North Africa Response Force 3 21.2, then returned to Yuma, Arizona, to be a tactical support 4 co-pilot for the WTI 22.1 class; 5 Whereas, Captain Tomkiewicz became an Aircraft 6 Commander for the MV-22B Osprey pilot with the Marine 7 Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 8 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing stationed on Marine Corps Air 9 Station New River, North Carolina, and then deployed to 10 Norway in support of NATO Cold Response training; 11 Whereas, During his military career, Captain Tomkiewicz 12 received a number of awards and decorations, including the 13 Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense 14 Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea 15 Service Deployment Ribbon, and Navy Arctic Service Ribbon; 16 Whereas, On March 18, 2022, Captain Tomkiewicz and 17 three other Marines assigned to the Marine Medium Tiltrotor 18 Squadron 261 perished when their Osprey crashed in 19 mountainous and tough weather conditions in Norway near the 20 Arctic Circle during the biennial NATO Cold Response war 21 games exercise; 22 Whereas, Captain Tomkiewicz and his fellow Marine 23 crewmates gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation 24 and its allies to defend, maintain, and promote democratic 25 freedom throughout the world; and 26 Whereas, Captain Matthew Tomkiewicz is survived by his 27 wife Lauren, his parents Tracy and Lisa, his brother Michael, 28 his sister Emily, and his beloved golden doodle Kevin Bacon: 29 Therefore, 30 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly 31 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives 32 concurring: 33 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the SC 12—RC 1507/DI JR 3 1 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename a section of 2 State Road 114 along the Whitley-Huntington County line, 3 beginning at the intersection of State Road 114 and County 4 Road N 400 E, and ending one mile east where State Road 114 5 intersects with County Road N 500 E, the "Captain Matthew 6 Tomkiewicz Memorial Mile". 7 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed 8 to transmit copies of this Resolution to the family of Captain 9 Matthew Tomkiewicz and the Commissioner of the Indiana 10 Department of Transportation.
