2221 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
2322 2 Department of Transportation to rename the portion of I-65
2423 3 between mile marker 137 and 138 in Boone County the
2524 4 "Deputy Jacob M. Pickett Memorial Mile".
2625 5 Whereas, Deputy Jacob "Jake" M. Pickett was born in
2726 6 Columbus, Ohio, to Marlin and Rebecca Pickett on December
2827 7 20, 1983;
2928 8 Whereas, After attending and graduating from Brownsburg
3029 9 High School, Deputy Pickett completed his initial law
3130 10 enforcement training at the Marion County Sheriff's Office
3231 11 Training Academy in 2010 and the Indiana Law Enforcement
3332 12 Academy in 2014 with Class 202 as a pistol expert;
3433 13 Whereas, Deputy Pickett began his law enforcement career
3534 14 in 2010 at the Marion County Sheriff's Office as a detention
3635 15 deputy and member of the Sheriff's Presentation Corps, where
3736 16 he served for three years before transferring to the Tipton
3837 17 County Sheriff's Office;
3938 18 Whereas, In 2015, Deputy Pickett joined the Boone County
4039 19 Sheriff's Office, where he served as a taser instructor, K-9 team
4140 20 leader, K-9 handler, and member of the Fraternal Order of
4241 21 Police #110;
4342 22 Whereas, Deputy Pickett's acts of service extended both in
4443 23 uniform and out of it by greeting children at school, organizing
4544 24 a children's Christmas card drive, and rescuing animals with
4645 25 his wife;

4847 1 Whereas, On March 2, 2018, the Lebanon Police
4948 2 Department were serving a warrant on a female subject when
5049 3 another male with multiple active warrants was seen in the
5150 4 area and fled the scene in a vehicle along with two other males,
5251 5 during which time Deputy Pickett joined the pursuit;
5352 6 Whereas, After a short pursuit, all three males exited the
5453 7 vehicle onto Indiana Spring Road and fled on foot, shortly
5554 8 followed by Deputy Pickett and his canine partner, Brik;
5655 9 Whereas, Deputy Pickett was fatally shot during the foot
5756 10 pursuit, but was able to complete one lasting act of service by
5857 11 donating his organs three days later;
5958 12 Whereas, Deputy Pickett is survived by his wife, Jennifer,
6059 13 sons, Lincoln David and Wade Matthew, parents, sister, and in-
6160 14 laws;
6261 15 Whereas, In honor of Deputy Pickett's legacy, Jennifer
6362 16 established the Jake Pickett Response Organization to assist
6463 17 other law enforcement families during tragic life events; and
6564 18 Whereas, It is fitting for the Indiana Department of
6665 19 Transportation to rename the portion of I-65 between mile
6766 20 marker 137 and 138 in Boone County in honor of Deputy
6867 21 Pickett's lifetime of service and dedication to Boone County and
6968 22 the State of Indiana: Therefore,
7069 23 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
7170 24 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
7271 25 concurring:
7372 26 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the
7473 27 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the portion of
7574 28 I-65 between mile marker 137 and 138 in Boone County the
7675 29 "Deputy Jacob M. Pickett Memorial Mile".
7776 30 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
7877 31 to transmit copies of this Resolution to the family of Deputy
7978 32 Jacob M. Pickett and the Commissioner of the Indiana
8079 33 Department of Transportation.

8382 Mr. President: The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and
8483 Transportation, to which was referred Senate Concurrent Resolution
8584 No. 13, has had the same under consideration and begs leave to report
