1212 MR. PRESIDENT:
1313 I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1414 1 A SENATE RESOLUTION to memorialize Joseph
1515 2 Olofson, former Pike Township Fire Chief and Marion County
1616 3 Firefighter.
1717 4 Whereas, Joseph (Joe) E. Olofson was born in
1818 5 Bloomington, Indiana, and spent his early years in Kokomo,
1919 6 Indiana, before moving to Indianapolis in 1951;
2020 7 Whereas, Joe graduated from Shortridge High School in
2121 8 1958 and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving two years of
2222 9 active duty aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Forrestal;
2323 10 Whereas, Joe fulfilled a lifelong dream in 1961 when he
2424 11 hired onto the Indianapolis Fire Department, where he would
2525 12 continue to serve for 41 years;
2626 13 Whereas, Joe served in many positions with the fire
2727 14 department and was continually promoted throughout his years
2828 15 of service. He was appointed to Division Chief of Operations
2929 16 on February 21, 2000, and initially retired in 2003.
3030 17 Immediately upon retirement, Joe became the Chief of Fire for
3131 18 the Pike Township Fire Department, holding this position for
3232 19 4 years;

3434 1 Whereas, Joe assisted in the planning of FDIC (Fire
3535 2 Department Instructors Conference) week for several years and
3636 3 was the 2nd President of the Local 416, President of the Retired
3737 4 Firefighters Club, member of the Murat Temple Shriners Club,
3838 5 and an avid Colts fan, always supporting his home team; and
3939 6 Whereas, Joe passed away on August 18, 2024, and is
4040 7 survived by his wife, Ruth, his three children, five
4141 8 grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren: Therefore,
4242 9 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
4343 10 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
4444 11 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate memorializes Chief
4545 12 Joseph Olofson.
4646 13 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby
4747 14 directed to transmit two copies of this Resolution to the family
4848 15 of Chief Joseph Olofson.
