PRESIDENT: I offer the following resolution and move its adoption: 1 A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Alex Shackell 2 of Carmel, Indiana, for winning the gold medal in the 4x100 3 medley relay and the silver medal in the 4x200 freestyle relay 4 at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. 5 Whereas, Alex Shackell was born on November 13, 2006, 6 to Nicholas and Ali Shackell; 7 Whereas, Alex's dream of competing in the Olympics began 8 when she was eight years old and was solidified while watching 9 the 2016 Olympic Games; 10 Whereas, Alex comes from a family of rich swimming 11 pedigree: her father was an 18-time All-American and two-time 12 Olympian; her mother was a 3-time All-American; her older 13 brother, Aaron, finished eighth in the 400 freestyle at the 2024 14 Summer Olympics; and her twin brother, Andrew, qualified for 15 the 2024 Olympic swim trials in the 200 freestyle; 16 Whereas, Alex had her vision come into focus when she 17 qualified for the 2023 World Aquatics Championships and 18 realized her Olympic dream when she qualified for the 200 19 butterfly and 4x200 freestyle at the 2024 Olympic swim trials; 2025 RR 3508/DI BB 2 1 Whereas, In addition to qualifying for those two events, 2 Alex was selected to compete in the 4x100 medley relay at last 3 year's Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France; 4 Whereas, While in Paris, Alex helped both the 4x200 5 freestyle and the 4x100 medley relay teams qualify in the 6 preliminary rounds, eventually taking home the silver and gold 7 medals in those events, respectively, while also finishing sixth 8 in the 200 butterfly final; 9 Whereas, Alex continued her streak of success by breaking 10 the world record as a part of the American team in the 4x100 11 freestyle relay at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming 12 Championships in Budapest, Hungary; and 13 Whereas, As a two-time Olympic medal winner and the first 14 Hoosier female athlete since 1968 to medal at an Olympics 15 while still in high school, Alex Shackell has forever secured a 16 place in Hoosier sports history: Therefore, 17 Be it resolved by the Senate of the 18 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 19 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate congratulates Alex 20 Shackell of Carmel, Indiana, for winning the gold medal in the 21 4x100 medley relay and the silver medal in the 4x200 freestyle 22 relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. 23 SECTION 2.
