1313 MR. PRESIDENT:
1414 I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1515 1 A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating Alex Shackell
1616 2 of Carmel, Indiana, for winning the gold medal in the 4x100
1717 3 medley relay and the silver medal in the 4x200 freestyle relay
1818 4 at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
1919 5 Whereas, Alex Shackell was born on November 13, 2006,
2020 6 to Nicholas and Ali Shackell;
2121 7 Whereas, Alex's dream of competing in the Olympics began
2222 8 when she was eight years old and was solidified while watching
2323 9 the 2016 Olympic Games;
2424 10 Whereas, Alex comes from a family of rich swimming
2525 11 pedigree: her father was an 18-time All-American and two-time
2626 12 Olympian; her mother was a 3-time All-American; her older
2727 13 brother, Aaron, finished eighth in the 400 freestyle at the 2024
2828 14 Summer Olympics; and her twin brother, Andrew, qualified for
2929 15 the 2024 Olympic swim trials in the 200 freestyle;
3030 16 Whereas, Alex had her vision come into focus when she
3131 17 qualified for the 2023 World Aquatics Championships and
3232 18 realized her Olympic dream when she qualified for the 200
3333 19 butterfly and 4x200 freestyle at the 2024 Olympic swim trials;

3535 1 Whereas, In addition to qualifying for those two events,
3636 2 Alex was selected to compete in the 4x100 medley relay at last
3737 3 year's Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France;
3838 4 Whereas, While in Paris, Alex helped both the 4x200
3939 5 freestyle and the 4x100 medley relay teams qualify in the
4040 6 preliminary rounds, eventually taking home the silver and gold
4141 7 medals in those events, respectively, while also finishing sixth
4242 8 in the 200 butterfly final;
4343 9 Whereas, Alex continued her streak of success by breaking
4444 10 the world record as a part of the American team in the 4x100
4545 11 freestyle relay at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming
4646 12 Championships in Budapest, Hungary; and
4747 13 Whereas, As a two-time Olympic medal winner and the first
4848 14 Hoosier female athlete since 1968 to medal at an Olympics
4949 15 while still in high school, Alex Shackell has forever secured a
5050 16 place in Hoosier sports history: Therefore,
5151 17 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
5252 18 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
5353 19 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate congratulates Alex
5454 20 Shackell of Carmel, Indiana, for winning the gold medal in the
5555 21 4x100 medley relay and the silver medal in the 4x200 freestyle
5656 22 relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
5757 23 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
5858 24 to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Alex Shackell.
