1414 SENATE RESOLUTION ____
1515 MR. PRESIDENT:
1616 I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1717 1 A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing April as
1818 2 Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2025, as World
1919 3 Parkinson's Day.
2020 4 Whereas, Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive
2121 5 neurological disease caused by a lack of the chemical
2222 6 dopamine in the brain and is the second-most common
2323 7 neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease;
2424 8
2525 9 Whereas, Parkinson's disease currently affects
2626 10 approximately 20,000 Hoosiers, nearly 1 million Americans,
2727 11 and over 10 million people worldwide;
2828 12 Whereas, The number of Americans diagnosed with
2929 13 Parkinson's disease is on the rise and is projected to eclipse 1.2
3030 14 million people by 2030;
3131 15 Whereas, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of
3232 16 death in the United States and has an estimated annual total
3333 17 cost just under $52 billion per year, split evenly between
3434 18 medical costs and non-medical costs, such as lost wages,
3535 19 caregiver time, and expenses;
3636 2025 DR 3847/DI TF 2
3737 1 Whereas, Medications to treat Parkinson's disease cost an
3838 2 average of $2,500 per year and therapeutic surgery can cost up
3939 3 to $100,000 per person;
4040 4
4141 5 Whereas, It is essential to educate Hoosiers about the
4242 6 symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including tremors, rigidity
4343 7 and bradykinesia (slow movement), postural instability,
4444 8 shuffling gait, speech and swallowing disturbances, cognitive
4545 9 impairment and dementia, and difficulty with fine hand
4646 10 movements;
4747 11 Whereas, Since not everyone with Parkinson's disease has
4848 12 all of the associated symptoms, careful diagnosis is critical;
4949 13 Whereas, Research suggests that the cause of Parkinson's
5050 14 disease is a combination of environmental and genetic factors,
5151 15 and at this time there is no known cure or drug to slow or halt
5252 16 the progression of the disease;
5353 17 Whereas, Currently, there is no objective test to diagnose
5454 18 Parkinson's disease and available treatments are limited in
5555 19 their ability to address patients' medical needs;
5656 20 Whereas, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical
5757 21 professionals are diligently working to improve the quality of
5858 22 life of persons living with Parkinson's disease and their
5959 23 families; and
6060 24 Whereas, Increased research, education, and community
6161 25 support services are needed to find more effective treatments
6262 26 and to provide access to quality care to those living with
6363 27 Parkinson's disease today: Therefore,
6464 28
6565 29 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
6666 30 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
6767 31 SECTION 1. That the Indiana State Senate recognizes April
