7+the prescribing of drugs by registered nurse anesthetists; prohibiting the
8+performance of an abortion or prescribing of drugs for an abortion
9+thereby; amending K.S.A. 65-1158 and repealing the existing section.
610 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas:
7-Section 1. K.S.A. 65-1158 is hereby amended to read as follows:
8-65-1158. (a) Upon the order of a physician or dentist requesting
9-anesthesia or analgesia care, each registered nurse anesthetist shall be

16-(4) select or administer appropriate medications and anesthetic
17-agents during the peri-anesthetic or peri-analgesic period;
19+(4) select or administer appropriate medications and anesthetic agents
20+during the peri-anesthetic or peri-analgesic period;
1821 (5) order necessary medications and tests in the peri-anesthetic or
1922 peri-analgesic period;
20-(6) induce and maintain anesthesia or analgesia at the required
21-levels;
22-(7) support life functions during the peri-anesthetic or peri-
23-analgesic period;

2426 (8) recognize and take appropriate action with respect to patient

28-(10) participate in the life support of the patient.
29-(b) (1) A registered nurse anesthetist may prescribe durable
30-medical equipment and prescribe, procure and administer any drug
31-consistent with the registered nurse anesthetist's education and
32-qualifications. Except as permitted by subsection (a), a registered
33-nurse anesthetist shall not prescribe, procure or administer any
34-anesthetic agent. Any drug that is a controlled substance shall be
35-prescribed, procured or administered in accordance with the uniform
36-controlled substance act. 
37-(2) A registered nurse anesthetist shall not perform or induce an
38-abortion or prescribe, procure or administer drugs for an abortion.
39-(3) A prescription order shall include the name, address and
40-telephone number of the registered nurse anesthetist. A registered nurse
41-anesthetist shall not dispense drugs but may request, receive and sign
42-for professional samples and may distribute professional samples to
43-patients.
44-(4) In order to prescribe controlled substances, a registered nurse
45-anesthetist shall:
46-(A) Register with the federal drug enforcement administration;
47-and
48-(B) comply with federal drug enforcement administration
49-requirements related to controlled substances.
50-(c) Each registered nurse anesthetist may participate in periodic
51-and joint evaluation of services rendered, including, but not limited to,
52-chart reviews, case reviews, patient evaluation and outcome of case
53-statistics.
54-(c)(d) A registered nurse anesthetist shall perform duties and
55-functions in an interdependent role as a member of a physician or
56-dentist directed health care healthcare team.
57-Sec. 2. K.S.A. 65-1158 is hereby repealed. Substitute for SENATE BILL No. 67—page 2
28+(9) manage the patient's emergence from anesthesia or analgesia; and
29+(10) participate in the life support of the patient may practice as an
30+independent advanced practice registered nurse to the full extent of the
31+licensee's education and qualifications, except that such registered nurse
32+anesthetist shall not perform surgery for the purposes of implantation of
33+medication reservoirs for drug delivery devices.
34+(b) Each A registered nurse anesthetist may participate in periodic and
35+joint evaluation of services rendered, including, but not limited to, chart
36+reviews, case reviews, patient evaluation and outcome of case statistics
37+prescribe, procure, select, order and administer any drug consistent with
38+such licensee's education and qualifications.

80+Sec. 2. K.S.A. 65-1158 is hereby repealed.
5881 Sec. 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its
5982 publication in the statute book.
