A RESOLUTION honoring Kentucky Humanities for 50 years of service to the 1
Commonwealth of Kentucky. 2
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities, an independent nonprofit affiliate organization 3
of the National Endowment for the Humanities, was established in 1972; and 4
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities is devoted to bringing humanity programs to 5
communities across the Commonwealth and recognizes the need to build civic 6
engagement; promote literacy for all ages; and honor the history, literature, philosophy, 7
and values by which we live in all Kentucky counties; and 8
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities is dedicated to telling Kentucky's story, because 9
we can all learn from the stories of others that, when taken together, shape our 10
communities, our counties, our regions, and our unique Kentucky culture and heritage; 11
and 12
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has made more than 2,600 grants to 13
organizations in Kentucky, totaling more than $9 million in 50 years of service to the 14
Commonwealth; and 15
WHEREAS, since tracking began in 1987, Kentucky Humanities has funded more 16
than 15,100 events throughout the state of Kentucky, including Speakers Bureau 17
presentations, Kentucky Chautauqua® dramas, Kentucky Reads book discussions, and 18
other special events; and 19
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has brought ten Smithsonian traveling 20
exhibitions to Kentucky for a total of 64 six-week tours, reaching a reported audience of 21
more than 77,000; and 22
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has published more than 48 issues of Kentucky 23
Humanities magazine and distributed more than 565,000 copies to the citizens of 24
Kentucky; and 25
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has published 14 new books for new readers 26
with the University Press of Kentucky and has issued more than 75,000 copies of these 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 22 RS BR 2344

books to adult emergent readers in Kentucky, and 1
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has assumed the management of the Kentucky 2
Book Fair, now called the Kentucky Book Festival, the longest running and premier book 3
festival in the state of Kentucky, now celebrating its 40th year; and 4
WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has sponsored more than 280 Prime Time 5
Family Reading® programs, reaching more than 4,200 families and more than 14,000 6
people in the Commonwealth; 7
NOW, THEREFORE, 8
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 9
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 10
Section 1. The House of Representatives recognizes and congratulates Kentucky 11
Humanities for 50 years of service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and all 120 12
counties. 13
Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 14
copy of this Resolution to Kentucky Humanities, 206 East Maxwell Street, Lexington, 15
Kentucky 40508. 16
