UNOFFICIAL COPY 22 RS BR 2338 Page 1 of 2 XXXX Jacketed A RESOLUTION honoring Kentucky Humanities for 50 years of service to the 1 Commonwealth of Kentucky. 2 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities, an independent nonprofit affiliate organization 3 of the National Endowment for the Humanities, was established in 1972; and 4 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities is devoted to bringing humanities programs to 5 communities across the Commonwealth and recognizes the need to build civic 6 engagement; promote literacy for all ages; and honor the history, literature, philosophy, 7 and values by which we live in all Kentucky counties; and 8 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities is dedicated to telling Kentucky's story, because 9 we can all learn from the stories of others that, when taken together, shape our 10 communities, our counties, our regions, and our unique Kentucky culture and heritage; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has made more than 2,600 grants to 13 organizations in Kentucky totaling more than $9 million in 50 years of service to the 14 Commonwealth; and 15 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has funded more than 15,100 events throughout 16 the state of Kentucky including Speakers Bureau presentations, Kentucky Chautauqua 17 dramas, Kentucky Reads book discussions, and other special events; and 18 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has brought ten Smithsonian traveling 19 exhibitions to Kentucky for a total of 64 six-week tours, reaching a reported audience of 20 more than 77,000; and 21 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has published more than 48 issues of Kentucky 22 Humanities magazine and distributed more than 565,000 copies to citizens of Kentucky; 23 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has published 14 books through its New Books 24 for New Readers program with the University Press of Kentucky and has issued more 25 than 75,000 copies of these books to adult emergent readers in Kentucky; and 26 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has assumed the management of the Kentucky 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 22 RS BR 2338 Page 2 of 2 XXXX Jacketed Book Fair, now called the Kentucky Book Festival, the longest running and premier book 1 festival in the state of Kentucky, now celebrating its 40th year; and 2 WHEREAS, Kentucky Humanities has sponsored more than 280 Prime Time 3 Family Reading programs, reaching more than 4,200 families and more than 14,000 4 people in the Commonwealth; 5 NOW, THEREFORE, 6 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 7 Kentucky: 8 Section 1. The General Assembly recognizes and congratulates Kentucky 9 Humanities for over 50 years of service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and all 120 10 counties therein. 11 Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 12 Resolution to Senator Damon Thayer for delivery. 13
