UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1824 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 3/14/2023 3:56 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION honoring the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on its 90th 1 anniversary and declaring May 18 to 24, 2023, as TVA Appreciation Week. 2 WHEREAS, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in order to lift the Tennessee Valley 3 out of the depths of the Great Depression, asked Congress as part of his New Deal 4 proposals to create "a corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed of 5 the flexibility and initiative of a private enterprise"; and 6 WHEREAS, on May 18, 1933, Congress responded by passing the Tennessee 7 Valley Authority Act establishing a corporation at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, charged with 8 improving flood control of the Tennessee River, providing agricultural and industrial 9 development of the Tennessee valley, and other responsibilities; and 10 WHEREAS, this corporation, known as TVA, pioneered innovative strategies for 11 solving challenges in areas such as power production, navigation, flood control, malaria 12 prevention, reforestation, and erosion control; and 13 WHEREAS, TVA contributed greatly to the valley’s agricultural production by 14 creating a world-class fertilizer research and development center at Muscle Shoals, 15 producing fertilizers, teaching farmers how to improve crop yields, and launching other 16 initiatives; and 17 WHEREAS, during World War II, TVA proved itself instrumental to the national 18 defense by utilizing the Muscle Shoals facilities to increase production of elemental 19 phosphorus, a vital military material, by 30 percent, and by producing more than 100,000 20 tons of calcium carbide for synthetic rubber production; and 21 WHEREAS, TVA contributed greatly to the valley’s economic prospects by 22 providing electricity generated in part by Kentucky’s coal industry at Shawnee Fossil, 23 Paradise Fossil and Combined Cycle, Kentucky Dam Hydro, Calvert City Combustion 24 Turbine, and by making life easier for the valley’s residents and attracting industry to 25 provide desperately needed jobs; and 26 WHEREAS, TVA's scenic Kentucky Lake reservoir and natural resources provide a 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1824 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 3/14/2023 3:56 PM Jacketed multitude of recreational opportunities for citizens and enhances tourism in communities; 1 and 2 WHEREAS, TVA successfully focuses on its core mission of improving the quality 3 of life in the valley by providing wholesale electric power competitively, cleanly, and 4 efficiently; and 5 WHEREAS, TVA provides community energy to 9 municipalities, 5 electric 6 cooperatives, and 13 direct service customers in the Commonwealth; and 7 WHEREAS, TVA is the nation’s largest public electric power company, serving 10 8 million residents in the valley’s seven-state region; and 9 WHEREAS, 90 years after President Roosevelt, Senator George Norris, and 10 Congress demonstrated the wisdom and foresight to create the Tennessee Valley 11 Authority, it is clear TVA continues to fulfill its charge to support an unprecedented era 12 of growth and prosperity in the valley; and 13 WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Kentucky recognizes the rich, 90-year history 14 of the Tennessee Valley Authority and its vital role in the region, and proudly declares 15 May 18 to 24, 2023, as TVA Appreciation Week; 16 NOW, THEREFORE, 17 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 18 Commonwealth of Kentucky: 19 Section 1. The House of Representatives honors the Tennessee Valley 20 Authority on this its 90th anniversary and hereby recognizes May 18 to 24, 2023, as TVA 21 Appreciation Week. 22 Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 23 copy of this Resolution to Representative Chris Freeland. 24
