UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1664 Page 1 of 1 XXXX 2/21/2023 12:11 PM Jacketed A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class Virgil 1 Mounts Memorial Bridge in Pike County. 2 WHEREAS, Virgil Mounts was born in 1928 in Pike County, Kentucky, the son of 3 Harrison and Louise Mounts; and 4 WHEREAS, Virgil Mounts attended McAndrews School, and like many young 5 men of that era, wanted to join the Army; and 6 WHEREAS, Virgil Mounts enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 15, 7 taking his brother's driver's license to use as identification, and became a Navy 8 Corpsman; and 9 WHEREAS, on June 8th, 1944, Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class Virgil Mounts was 10 providing care for Army assault troops on Omaha Beach during the Invasion of 11 Normandy when a shell exploded nearby, killing him instantly; and 12 WHEREAS, although listed as 18 years of age in official military records because 13 of his enlistment identification, Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class Virgil Mounts, at age 16, is 14 thought to be the youngest service member to be killed at the D-Day invasion; and 15 WHEREAS, the gallantry Virgil Mounts showed in tending to his brothers in arms 16 while fighting Nazi barbarism is still remembered by his relatives in the Pond Creek area 17 and should receive tangible public recognition, no matter how inadequate that recognition 18 might be; 19 NOW, THEREFORE, 20 Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 21 ď˘Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate the bridge on Kentucky 22 Route 199 in Pike County, at mile point 8.88 (Bridge ID# 098B00291N), as the "Chief 23 Petty Officer 3rd Class Virgil Mounts Memorial Bridge" and shall, within 30 days of the 24 effective date of this Resolution, erect appropriate signs denoting this designation. 25
