UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1325 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/17/2023 2:09 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION honoring the late Loretta Lynn and urging the Kentucky 1 Department of Parks to consider the best methods of honoring her in our park system. 2 WHEREAS, Loretta Lynn was born April 14, 1932, in a coal miner's shack in 3 Butcher Hollow, Kentucky; and 4 WHEREAS, she rose to fame after the release of her first single, "Honky Tonk 5 Girl" in 1960; and 6 WHEREAS, her country hits, such as "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin," made her 7 one of country music's biggest stars; and 8 WHEREAS, she officially earned the title "Queen of Country" after she released 9 her signature song, "Coal Miner's Daughter" in 1970; and 10 WHEREAS, proud of her heritage, her service to the Commonwealth included 11 organizing a benefit concert in Louisville's Freedom Hall in 1971 to raise money for the 12 widows and children of 38 miners killed in an explosion at a coal mine near Hyden, 13 Kentucky; and 14 WHEREAS, sadly Loretta Lynn passed away on October 4, 2022, in Hurricane 15 Mills, Tennessee; and 16 WHEREAS, despite her death, Loretta Lynn remains an illustrious thread in the 17 fabric of America's cultural heritage; and 18 WHEREAS, the Senate acknowledges the necessity of honoring her legacy by 19 enshrining her name in one or more of our state parks for visitors to remember her as they 20 enjoy the state's natural treasures; and 21 WHEREAS, this Senate strongly urges the Department of the Parks to identify the 22 appropriate course of action to honor her contributions to this Commonwealth and the 23 nation; and 24 NOW, THEREFORE, 25 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 26 Kentucky: 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1325 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/17/2023 2:09 PM Jacketed Section 1. The Senate honors the memory of a great Kentuckian, Loretta Lynn. 1 Section 2. The Senate urges the Department of the Parks to create a committee 2 of diverse stakeholders to identify the best methods of honoring Loretta Lynn in our park 3 system. 4 Section 3. The Senate requests that the Department of the Parks report to the 5 Legislative Research Commission by January 1, 2024, on the possible solutions and a 6 recommendation for future legislative action. 7
