A RESOLUTION honoring Lexington restaurant Joe Bologna's 50th anniversary. 1
WHEREAS, on March 1, 2023, the iconic Lexington restaurant named for its 2
owner, Joe Bologna, is celebrating its 50th anniversary, which is known for its hand 3
made breadsticks and made from scratch pizza; and 4
WHEREAS, a native of Detroit, Joe Bologna and his wife Anne moved to 5
Lexington after his service in the United States Air Force, where he learned to cook for 6
thousands while serving in the Vietnam War; and 7
WHEREAS, Joe Bologna opened his first restaurant in 1973 at the corner of 8
Maxwell and Limestone in Lexington, where he remained for approximately 16 years 9
serving locals, college students, and visiting celebrities; and 10
WHEREAS, in August 1989, the new Joe Bologna's moved to its current location at 11
120 Maxwell Street; and 12
WHEREAS, the building, which was built in 1891 as the Maxwell Street 13
Presbyterian Church and later rededicated as a Jewish Synagogue, is beautifully 14
decorated with stained glass windows and a cathedral ceiling; and 15
WHEREAS, despite facing many challenges over the years, including a fire, 16
recessions, and the COVID pandemic, Joe Bologna's is thriving and is even close to pre-17
pandemic sales and business; 18
NOW, THEREFORE, 19
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 20
Kentucky: 21
Section 1. The Senate hereby honors Lexington restaurant Joe Bologna's 50th 22
anniversary and its owner. 23
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day it does so in honor of Joe 24
Bologna's 50th anniversary. 25
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 26
Resolution to Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe for delivery to Joe Bologna's restaurant. 27
