UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1746 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/24/2023 8:47 AM Jacketed A RESOLUTION honoring the 150th anniversary of Central High School. 1 WHEREAS, the institution that became Central High School was recognized as the 2 first public school for African Americans in Louisville and was initially funded by 3 African American property taxes only; and 4 WHEREAS, on October 7, 1873, the school's first building was dedicated and 5 initially named the Central Colored School; and 6 WHEREAS, in 1882, high school grades were added to the institution and it was 7 called Central Colored High School; and 8 WHEREAS, in 1945, the name was officially changed to Central High School; and 9 WHEREAS, in 1952, after growing and moving locations several times, Central 10 High School moved to its current location at 1130 West Chestnut Street, and was the 11 largest high school in the state for African Americans, with 1,400 students and 57 faculty 12 members; and 13 WHEREAS, until 1975, when court-ordered busing began, Central High School 14 was the only predominately African American public high school in Louisville; and 15 WHEREAS, today Central High School is called the Central High School Career 16 Magnet Academy and offers a pre-college curriculum featuring over 11 career magnets; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, over the past 150 years, Central High School's tradition of greatness 19 and firsts includes being not only the first public school for African Americans in 20 Louisville, but also the first to desegregate athletics in Kentucky, and the first high school 21 to adopt a career magnet and Montessori program; 22 NOW, THEREFORE, 23 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 24 Kentucky: 25 Section 1.
