UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1777 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/28/2023 4:39 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION recognizing Central City on the occasion of the 150th 1 anniversary of its founding. 2 WHEREAS, situated on the Green River in Muhlenberg County, the community 3 that was established in 1826, originally occupying 200 acres, and now known as Central 4 City was previously known as Morehead's Horse Mill, Stroud City, and Owensboro 5 Junction; and 6 WHEREAS, Central City is well-known for its coal mining history, at one time 7 having 23 mines in operation within or proximate to the city, and leading coal production 8 in the United States in the 1970s; and 9 WHEREAS, Central City served as a nexus for several rail lines, and its depot and 10 passenger train service was active well into the 1960s; and 11 WHEREAS, Central City is renowned for its musical heritage, being home to the 12 Muhlenberg Music Museum featuring Central City's most famous musicians, the Everly 13 Brothers, and other notable performers, including flutist Jim Walker, country and folk 14 music's John Prine, and country music's Merle Travis, all with local connections; and 15 WHEREAS, the Central City High School Marching Band under the direction of 16 Bob Walker also shares in the musical distinction of the city, being known as one of the 17 finest marching bands in the Commonwealth; and 18 WHEREAS, Central City was also the home of Central City High School prior to 19 its closure, which had the distinction of being the winningest high school basketball 20 program in the Commonwealth with over 1,578 victories, 17 Kentucky High School 21 Athletics Association State Sweet Sixteen appearances, 3 semi-final appearances, and a 22 state championship appearance; and 23 WHEREAS, on August 11, 2023, Central City will celebrate the 150th anniversary 24 of its founding; 25 NOW, THEREFORE, 26 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1777 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/28/2023 4:39 PM Jacketed Kentucky: 1 Section 1. The Senate does hereby recognize Central City on the occasion of the 2 150th anniversary of its founding, and notes its rich history and unique story among the 3 cities of this Commonwealth. 4 Section 2. The Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to 5 Senator Whitney Westerfield for presentation to Mayor Tony Armour, Mayor of Central 6 City. 7
