UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1038 Page 1 of 1 XXXX 1/5/2023 6:11 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION condemning the January 6, 2021, United States Capitol riots. 1 WHEREAS, the hallmark of democracy is the peaceful transition of power by 2 elected leaders; and 3 WHEREAS, the United States Capitol is the seat of our government and embodies 4 our tradition of an open, transparent, and democratic governance; and 5 WHEREAS, the attack on the United States Capitol temporarily halted the 6 ceremonial tabulation of the Electoral College votes in an unprecedented assault upon 7 democracy and the peaceful transition of power in the United States; and 8 WHEREAS, the violence that took place on January 6, 2021, left an estimated 140 9 members of law enforcement, who serve and protect the United States Capitol and the 10 United States Congress, with serious injuries; and 11 WHEREAS, these acts of violence and rioting represented a threat to the safety of 12 the members of the United States Congress, and they were an affront to the United States 13 Constitution, democracy, and our commitment to holding free and fair elections that 14 ensure every American is able to exercise the right to vote; and 15 WHEREAS, we should confirm our commitment to be ever vigilant to protect and 16 defend democracy from not only outside of the United States, but also from within; 17 NOW, THEREFORE, 18 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 19 Kentucky: 20 Section 1. The members of the Senate do hereby condemn the United States 21 Capitol riots of January 6, 2021. 22 Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 23 Resolution to Senator Gerald Neal. 24
