A RESOLUTION recognizing April as Deaf Education Month in the 1 
Commonwealth and honoring the Kentucky School for the Deaf's two centuries of 2 
outstanding service to the Commonwealth. 3 
WHEREAS, this year marks the 200th year the Kentucky School for the Deaf has 4 
successfully educated deaf and hard of hearing children in the Commonwealth of 5 
Kentucky; and 6 
WHEREAS, when the Kentucky School for the Deaf opened in 1823, it was the 7 
first deaf school west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first state-sponsored deaf 8 
school in the country; and 9 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky School for the Deaf has been and continues to be a 10 
leader in deaf education, attracting students from across the nation; and 11 
WHEREAS, in its role as the as the Statewide Educational Resource Center on 12 
Deafness, the Kentucky School for the Deaf serves students from every corner of the 13 
Commonwealth by providing consultation, curriculum evaluation, program planning, and 14 
professional development activities to schools; and  15 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky School for the Deaf's current and former administration, 16 
faculty, staff, student body, and alumni should be recognized for their outstanding 17 
contribution to the Commonwealth of Kentucky; 18 
NOW, THEREFORE, 19 
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 20 
Kentucky: 21 
Section 1.   The Kentucky Senate does hereby recognize April as Deaf Education 22 
Month in Kentucky.  23 
Section 2.   When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the two 24 
centuries of outstanding service to the Commonwealth provided by the Kentucky School 25 
for the Deaf.  26
