A RESOLUTION honoring the Colon Cancer Prevention Project on the celebration 1 
of its 20-year anniversary and designating March 2023 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness 2 
Month in Kentucky. 3 
WHEREAS, the Colon Cancer Prevention Project is celebrating 20 years of 4 
prevention in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and 5 
WHEREAS, Dr. Whitney Jones, a Louisville gastroenterologist, started the Colon 6 
Cancer Prevention Project in 2003 after diagnosing several patients with colorectal 7 
cancer; and 8 
WHEREAS, for 20 years the project has worked to end preventable colorectal 9 
cancer death and suffering in Kentucky by increasing effective screenings; and 10 
WHEREAS, each year 650 fewer Kentuckians are diagnosed with colorectal cancer 11 
and 275 fewer Kentuckians die from colorectal cancer; and 12 
WHEREAS, Dr. Jones and the Colon Cancer Prevention Project have saved 13 
numerous lives in Kentucky through advocacy, education, health system improvement, 14 
and survivor support; and 15 
WHEREAS, the General Assembly and citizens of Kentucky are immensely 16 
grateful for the dedicated efforts and commitment of the Colon Cancer Prevention 17 
Project; and 18 
WHEREAS, colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer related 19 
deaths in men and women in Kentucky, and Kentucky currently ranks among the highest 20 
in the nation in colorectal cancer mortality; and 21 
WHEREAS, by 2030, colorectal cancer is projected to be the leading cause of 22 
cancer deaths in 20 to 49 year olds; and 23 
WHEREAS, Kentucky continues to have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer 24 
in the United States; and 25 
WHEREAS, Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is observed in March to highlight 26 
the importance of screening for colorectal cancer, as well as to promote healthy lifestyle 27  UNOFFICIAL COPY  	23 RS BR 1151

habits that can decrease a person's risk of developing colorectal cancer; 1 
NOW, THEREFORE, 2 
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 3 
Kentucky: 4 
Section 1.   The Senate hereby honors Dr. Whitney Jones and the exceptional 5 
work of the Colon Cancer Prevention Project in saving lives in Kentucky on its 20-year 6 
anniversary and encourages continued support for efforts to eliminate deaths from 7 
colorectal cancer. 8 
Section 2. The Senate hereby designates March 2023 as Colorectal Cancer 9 
Awareness Month in Kentucky. 10 
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 11 
Resolution to Senator Stephen Meredith. 12
