A RESOLUTION recognizing April 2023 as Organ Donor Month. 1
WHEREAS, more than 2 million Kentuckians have placed their names on the 2
Kentucky Organ Donor Registry; and 3
WHEREAS, there are currently more than 1,000 Kentuckians waiting for an organ 4
donation, with the largest waiting group being persons 50 to 64 years of age; and 5
WHEREAS, on average, one person is added to the national organ transplant 6
waiting list every ten minutes; and 7
WHEREAS, the need for organ donations greatly surpasses the supply available 8
and the divide will likely increase in the coming years; and 9
WHEREAS, approximately 22 patients die every day while waiting for a donated 10
heart, liver, kidney, or other organ; and 11
WHEREAS, an organ donation from a single donor can save the lives of up to eight 12
people; and 13
WHEREAS, last year 239 organ donors and 529 tissue donors resulted in nearly 14
600 lives saved across Kentucky; and 15
WHEREAS, raising awareness and promoting information about the need for organ 16
donors and encouraging people to become organ donors is imperative to increase the 17
number of lives saved and changed for the better through organ donation; 18
NOW, THEREFORE, 19
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 20
Kentucky: 21
Section 1. The Senate hereby recognizes April 2023 as Organ Donor Month. 22
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 23
Resolution to Senator Jason Howell. 24
