UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2254 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/26/2024 4:16 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION recognizing May 16, 2024, and October 31, 2024, as Take Your 1 Child to Vote Day. 2 WHEREAS, May 16, 2024, is the first day of no-excuse in-person absentee voting 3 for the primary and October 31, 2024, is the first day of no-excuse in-person absentee 4 voting for the regular election; and 5 WHEREAS, voting is a vitally important element of self-governance and the 6 maintenance of a functional democracy and civil liberties; and 7 WHEREAS, the idea of government by the people, for the people, and of the people 8 has been the driving force of this country's history, with countless lives being sacrificed 9 in pursuit of this noble goal; and 10 WHEREAS, the importance of democracy can be seen in the struggle to expand 11 suffrage to historically excluded groups, such as women and racial minorities; and 12 WHEREAS, recent polls have shown younger generations are growing increasingly 13 skeptical of the democratic process; and 14 WHEREAS, these trends represent a major threat to the ideals that this country was 15 founded on, and particularly show cause for concern among younger generations; and 16 WHEREAS, in 2020, the New York Times reported that one potential reason for 17 low voter turnout for the younger generation is that they have had fewer opportunities to 18 form the habit as compared to older generations; and 19 WHEREAS, one of the best ways to foster civic virtue and appreciation for 20 democracy in youth is to expose them to the democratic process firsthand, with a clear 21 example of this being taking one's children to the voting booth; and 22 WHEREAS, people of all ages are generally influenced by what they see friends 23 and family doing; and 24 WHEREAS, taking one's children to the polls teaches them how to use their own 25 voice to stand up for what they believe in; and 26 WHEREAS, while a child may not yet understand the issues and candidates on the 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2254 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/26/2024 4:16 PM Jacketed ballot, teaching your child about the practice of voting is important in instilling basic 1 habits of participating in the democratic process; and 2 WHEREAS, one great way to learn is by firsthand experience; and 3 WHEREAS, this basic fact holds true for voting as well, with a child witnessing 4 their parents voting leading to further interest in the democratic process and appreciation 5 for democracy; 6 NOW, THEREFORE, 7 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 8 Commonwealth of Kentucky: 9 Section 1. The House of Representatives hereby recognizes May 16, 2024, and 10 October 31, 2024, as Take Your Child to Vote Day. 11 Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 12 copy of this resolution to Representative Rachel Roarx. 13
