When symptomatic, 7 Tarlov cysts can be progressive, extremely painful, and debilitating, and can often limit 8 the patient’s ability to walk, sit, or stand; and 9 WHEREAS, more women are diagnosed with Tarlov Cyst Disease than men; and 10 WHEREAS, Tarlov Cyst Disease symptoms include but are not limited to, varying 11 levels of intractable pain that are usually defined by cyst location and associated nerve 12 distribution. Progressive nerve compression can lead to neurological damage. Pain often 13 mimics other conditions therefore making this rare disease difficult to diagnose; and 14 WHEREAS, treatment for Tarlov Cyst Disease generally focuses on controlling 15 symptoms, with some patients finding long-term relief through surgical intervention; and 16 WHEREAS, some patients with Tarlov Cyst Disease may also present with 17 additional comorbid conditions such as connective tissue disorders. Patients often remain 18 at an increased risk of developing other conditions and diseases due to the limited 19 invasive medical treatments to provide relief of pain and symptoms. This disease and its 20 symptoms vary widely depending on the severity of each case; and 21 WHEREAS, the need for research on the origins of the disease, noninvasive 22 treatments, and the continued support of neurosurgical procedures is imperative; and 23 WHEREAS, insurance companies often deny patients necessary treatments and 24 surgery under misinformed pretenses that they are experimental, unnecessary, or 25 ineffective; 26 NOW, THEREFORE, 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2478 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 3/15/2024 1:36 PM Jacketed Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 1 Commonwealth of Kentucky: 2 Section 1.
