A RESOLUTION urging the United States Congress to designate Big Bone Lick 1 
State Historic Site as a national historical park and the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and 2 
Heritage Cabinet to work in conjunction with the United States Congress and the United 3 
States Department of the Interior to facilitate in this endeavor. 4 
WHEREAS, visitors can enjoy Big Bone Lick State Historic Site's rich landscape 5 
and unique experiences, with a visit to its salty natural springs from which the site gets its 6 
name; a glimpse of the bison herd roaming the grounds; a walk through the visitor center 7 
where fossils and life-size replicas of many prehistoric animals are displayed; or by 8 
participating in entertaining and informative lessons in local geology and Native 9 
American history; and 10 
WHEREAS, the first map of Kentucky prepared in 1784 stated on the legend: "Big 11 
Bone Lick; Salt and Medical Spring. Large bones are found there"; and 12 
WHEREAS, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site gained further national significance 13 
when, at the request of President Thomas Jefferson, expeditions by Meriwether Lewis 14 
and William Clark led to digs at Big Bone Lick in 1803 and 1807, that established the site 15 
as the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology; and 16 
WHEREAS, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site has been recognized as the key to 17 
understanding the life of the Ice Age in North America; and 18 
WHEREAS, Big Bone Lick has been included in indexes of all the principal 19 
geological, paleontological, and scientific journals in the United States, England, 20 
Germany, and France; 21 
NOW, THEREFORE, 22 
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 23 
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 24 
Section 1. The House of Representatives urges the United States Congress, 25 
including the Kentucky Congressional delegation, to designate Big Bone Lick State 26 
Historic Site as a national historical park and the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage 27  UNOFFICIAL COPY  	24 RS BR 2543

Cabinet to work in conjunction with the United States Congress and the United States 1

Section 2.   The Clerk of the House of Representatives shall send a copy of this 3 
Resolution to the Clerk of the House of Representatives of the United States, the Clerk of 4 
the Senate of the United States, each member of the Kentucky Congressional delegation, 5 
and the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. 6
