A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the PFC Larry Gene Ratliff Memorial 1
Highway in Martin County. 2
WHEREAS, Larry Gene Ratliff was born on September 9, 1948, in Louisa, 3
Kentucky; and 4
WHEREAS, as a young man attending Inez High School, Larry Gene Ratliff 5
proved to be a highly capable student, friend, and athlete, competing on the school's 6
Senior intramural basketball team and Rifle Team; and 7
WHEREAS, following his graduation from Inez High School, Larry Gene Ratliff 8
enlisted in the United States Marines and was deployed to Quang Nam Province, South 9
Vietnam, as part of the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion; and 10
WHEREAS, following his enlistment, Private First Class Larry Gene Ratliff began 11
his tour of duty on October 14, 1968; and 12
WHEREAS, just 54 days after reporting for duty, Private First Class Larry Gene 13
Ratliff was killed by hostile action in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam, making him 14
the fourth Martin County casualty of the Vietnam War; and 15
WHEREAS, Private First Class Larry Gene Ratliff received many military 16
recognitions both during his life and after his death, including the Purple Heart, Combat 17
Action Ribbon, Marksmanship Badge, and National Defense Service Medal, among 18
others; and 19
WHEREAS, in recognition of Private First Class Larry Gene Ratliff's life, joy 20
shared with loved ones, and eternal sacrifice, it is appropriate that his service be 21
memorialized in some tangible way; 22
NOW, THEREFORE, 23
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 24
ď˘Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate the portion of Kentucky 25
Route 292 in Martin County, from the intersection of KY-292 and KY-3213 26

28.9), as the "PFC Larry Gene Ratliff Memorial Highway" and shall, within 30 days of 1
the effective date of this Resolution, erect appropriate signs denoting this designation. 2
