UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1910 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/7/2024 4:55 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION recognizing April 2024 as Autism Acceptance and Awareness 1 Month. 2 WHEREAS, one in 36 children in the United States have been diagnosed with 3 autism spectrum disorder; and 4 WHEREAS, individuals living autism spectrum disorder can achieve independence 5 and live purposeful lives when afforded the support system and opportunities that each 6 and everyone deserves; and 7 WHEREAS, many individuals and families living with autism know that 8 acceptance is often one of the largest barriers to finding and developing a strong support 9 system; and 10 WHEREAS, the Autism Society of Kentucky understands the importance of 11 fostering acceptance in order to achieve equity in education, employment, housing, health 12 care, and comprehensive long-term services and supports; and 13 WHEREAS, the Autism Society of Kentucky provides education and understanding 14 to promote acceptance, inspire inclusion, and create systems-wide change for individuals 15 with autism so they may achieve full participation within society; and 16 WHEREAS, policies need to be implemented that break down barriers for 17 individuals with autism so they may succeed in their chosen communities; and 18 WHEREAS, self-advocates, family caregivers, professionals, and others who work 19 every day to create more opportunities for individuals with autism should be recognized 20 for their contributions; and 21 WHEREAS, one goal of Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month is to spread 22 awareness, foster acceptance, and empower everyone in the autism community with the 23 resources needed to live fully; and 24 WHEREAS, the ultimate goal is to create a world where everyone in the autism 25 community feels accepted and connected to the support they need when they need it; and 26 WHEREAS, the members of the Senate celebrate the myriad ways in which those 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1910 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/7/2024 4:55 PM Jacketed with autism contribute to their families and communities in Kentucky; 1 NOW, THEREFORE, 2 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 3 Kentucky: 4 Section 1. The Senate does hereby recognizes April 2024 as Autism Acceptance 5 and Awareness Month in the Commonwealth. 6 Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 7 Resolution to Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe. 8
