UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1965 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/8/2024 5:07 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and celebration of Glendell 1 Bennett on the occasion of his 100th birthday. 2 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett was born a century ago on March 2, 1924, in 3 Chicago, Illinois. On March 2, 2024, he will proudly celebrate his 100th birthday, and the 4 Senate commends and congratulates him on a life well-lived with honor and 5 perseverance; and 6 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, from Chicago, 7 Illinois, in 2012 to be near his daughters after time spent in Illinois and Texas; and 8 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett, prior to being drafted into the United States Army, 9 volunteered with the Tuskegee Airmen and was proud to clear brush for landing strips 10 and work on the maintenance of the aircraft; and 11 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett served in the United States Army during World War 12 II from 1943 to 1947, stationed throughout Europe, with a regiment that delivered 13 supplies to the front lines. His unit was known as the Quartermaster Truck Company and 14 was a part of the Red Ball Express, primarily composed of Black soldiers; and 15 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett worked alongside many civil rights leaders in 16 Chicago, promoting equality and representation in business and politics. One of his 17 proudest moments was when his daughter, Hon. Diane Minnifield was sworn in as 18 Circuit Judge of the Twenty-second Judicial Circuit, 7th Division, in Fayette County; and 19 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett received many recognitions and rewards based on 20 his remarkable life, including the recording of his oral history for the Library of 21 Congress; and 22 WHEREAS, late into his 90s, Glendell Bennett could be found working with 23 Kentucky's Senior Community Service Employment Program as a greeter at the 24 Leestown Road Goodwill store in Lexington; and 25 WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett fathered nine children and was a stepfather to three 26 children; and 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1965 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/8/2024 5:07 PM Jacketed WHEREAS, Glendell Bennett attends church at the historic Main Street Baptist 1 Church in Lexington, Kentucky, and enjoys spending time with his children, 2 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who join the Senate in celebration of an 3 extraordinary man who has lived in an America that he fought for, struggled in, and still 4 believes in; 5 NOW, THEREFORE, 6 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 7 Kentucky: 8 Section 1. The Senate congratulates Glendell Bennett on a life well-lived and 9 wishes him continued success in all future endeavors. 10 Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and 11 celebration of Glendell Bennett on the occasion of his 100th birthday. 12 Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 13 Resolution to Senator Reginald Thomas for delivery. 14
