A RESOLUTION honoring the 40th anniversary of the Kentucky Center for the 1 
Performing Arts.  2 
WHEREAS, in 1980 the Kentucky General Assembly and Governor John Y. 3 
Brown established a major public/private partnership to create the Kentucky Center for 4 
the Performing Arts; and 5 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts was established to 6 
promote state culture and tourism, provide a home for Louisville's prominent art groups, 7 
and enable citizens to see renowned works of international and domestic artists; and 8 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts officially opened its doors 9 
on November 19, 1983, with a gala event that included Charlton Heston, Diane Sawyer, 10 
Lily Tomlin, Jessye Norman, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr; and  11 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts has garnered national 12 
recognition for hosting events such as the 1984 presidential debate between Ronald 13 
Reagan and Walter Mondale, the Lonesome Pine Special Series that aired on the Public 14 
Broadcasting Service, and many live Broadway performances; and  15 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts is an iconic venue of the 16 
Commonwealth, located in the heart of Louisville's downtown arts and cultural district, 17 
drawing more than 350,000 visitors annually; and  18 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts brings in millions of 19 
dollars to the local and state economy annually; and  20 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts has a stellar reputation 21 
among touring artists and large-scale productions due to its impressive amenities and 22 
boisterous rehearsal halls, theaters, and backstage areas; and 23 
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts is committed to housing 24 
and expressing artistic talent from around the state, the nation, and abroad, to educate, 25 
entertain, and inspire the people of Kentucky; 26

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 1 
Kentucky: 2 
Section 1.   The Senate hereby recognizes and celebrates the 40th anniversary of 3 
the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and its contributions to the arts and 4 
humanities community in Louisville and the Commonwealth. 5 
Section 2.  The Clerk of the Senate is hereby is directed to transmit a copy of 6 
this Resolution to Senator Julie Raque Adams. 7
