UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2063 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 3/14/2024 5:25 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION honoring WGOH and WUGO radio stations for 65 years of 1 service to the community of Carter County and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 2 WHEREAS, on June 1, 1959, WGOH-AM aired its first broadcast to residents of 3 Carter County. The station features a format of Country Gold, Bluegrass, the Kentucky 4 Network, religious programs, and local high school sports; and 5 WHEREAS, in 1967, a new station came to the Carter County airwaves. WUGO-6 FM offers 24-hour air time, broadcasting adult contemporary music. The station also 7 broadcasts national, state, and local news; local high school sports; University of 8 Kentucky sports; and Cincinnati Reds baseball; and 9 WHEREAS, in 1982, the radio airwaves expanded to local community television. 10 Cable TV-14 Grayson serves over 2,900 homes with audio provided from WUGO-FM 11 and color video messages 24-hours each day. The station offers the time, local news 12 headlines, temperature, weather, and local County Conversation shows; and 13 WHEREAS, in 2011, WGOH-AM expanded to the FM dial and broadcasts the 14 programming of the AM station 24-hours each day to Carter County and surrounding 15 counties; and 16 WHEREAS, the combination of four media formats operated by GO Radio of the 17 Carter County Broadcasting Company, Inc., provides an opportunity to reach audiences 18 young and old throughout the region. GO Radio recognizes that stability and dedication 19 of a locally-owned and independent business provides a unique service to its listeners; 20 and 21 WHEREAS, GO Radio has a commitment to public service and community 22 involvement. The National Association of Broadcasters awarded the Crystal Award to 23 WGOH in 1999 and WUGO in 2003, 2005, and 2008. GO Radio stations have been the 24 only recipient of this award for programming and community involvement within 25 Kentucky. In 1996 and 1999, GO Radio was a finalist for the Macaroni Award as the best 26 small-market station in the nation. In 2000, GO Radio was the winner of the Kentucky 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2063 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 3/14/2024 5:25 PM Jacketed Broadcasters Association's Golden Tower Award for community service and public 1 involvement; and 2 WHEREAS, these accomplishments would not have been possible without the 3 legacy of the Shufflebarger family for their vision of the radio stations and insistence on 4 providing quality radio to Carter County. To fulfill the family's vision, former and current 5 employees dedicate hours of airtime across the channels. Some of the stations' loyal 6 employees include local, Kentucky, and national celebrities, Tim Carper, Melodie Carter, 7 Bill Craig, Charlie Esposito, Tom T. Hall, Ken Jackson, Mic Marshall, Dick Martin, Paul 8 Mullins, Frances Nash, Jim Phillips, Mike Phillips, Jeff Roe, Carmel Stevens, Bill 9 Stewart, and Dr. Robert C. Webb. Mr. Stevens hosted a bluegrass show and Dr. Webb 10 hosted "Game Club of the Air," that lasted for over 25 years; 11 NOW, THEREFORE, 12 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 13 Kentucky: 14 Section 1. The Senate hereby recognizes and celebrates the long history of 15 WGOH and WUGO and honors GO Radio for providing a variety of music, news, sports, 16 and weather across the airwaves to the citizens of Carter County and the Commonwealth 17 of Kentucky. 18 Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of the 19 Resolution to Senator Robin Webb. 20
