UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2472 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 3/14/2024 5:34 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Kentucky Lottery. 1 WHEREAS, on March 26, 1989, the board of directors of the Kentucky Lottery 2 Corporation launched the Kentucky Lottery; and 3 WHEREAS, later that same year, the Kentucky Lottery Corporation delivered its 4 first round of financial support to the people of the Commonwealth in the form of a 5 dividend check for $41 million; and 6 WHEREAS, in 1998, the General Assembly instituted a new program, the 7 Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES), funded entirely by the Kentucky 8 Lottery. This program continues to assist Kentucky high school students, homeschool 9 students, and high school equivalency diploma graduates to pursue postsecondary 10 education; and 11 WHEREAS, since the creation of KEES, $4.8 billion in lottery dividend proceeds 12 have funded Kentucky education. One out of every five Kentucky citizens have received 13 grants and scholarships from these funds. Almost one million college students have 14 received educational assistance funding, and over three million grants and scholarships 15 have been awarded; and 16 WHEREAS, the KEES program receives all of its funding exclusively from the 17 Kentucky Lottery, and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority receives 97 18 percent of its funding from the lottery; and 19 WHEREAS, the Kentucky Lottery also funds the following scholarship programs: 20 the Kentucky Tuition Grant, the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, the Dual Credit 21 Scholarship Program, and the College Access Program; and 22 WHEREAS, for every dollar received by the Kentucky Lottery, 20 percent of that 23 dollar goes back to the Commonwealth; and 24 WHEREAS, the Kentucky Lottery Corporation has now provided more than $6.8 25 billion in total proceeds to this Commonwealth since its inception; and 26 WHEREAS, the Kentucky Lottery Corporation has been a key part of moving 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2472 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 3/14/2024 5:34 PM Jacketed Kentucky forward and supporting our next generation; 1 NOW, THEREFORE, 2 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 3 Kentucky: 4 Section 1. The Senate celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Kentucky Lottery 5 and honors its many contributions to the Commonwealth. 6 Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to deliver a copy of this 7 Resolution to Senator Matthew Deneen. 8
