UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 806 Page 1 of 3 XXXX 11/2/2023 10:41 AM Jacketed A RESOLUTION honoring the life and accomplishments of former Kentucky 1 Governor Brereton Chandler Jones. 2 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones was born on June 27, 1939, to the late 3 Bartow and Nedra Jones, and grew up in Point Pleasant, West Virginia; and 4 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones's athletic ability allowed him to secure a 5 football scholarship to the University of Virginia, where he was elected President of the 6 School of Commerce and served as a member of the school's renowned Honor 7 Committee; and 8 WHEREAS, after graduation, Brereton Chandler Jones moved to Huntington, West 9 Virginia, where he began a career in politics. He was elected to the West Virginia House 10 of Delegates at the age of 25, the youngest person to ever serve in that capacity; and 11 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones was elected as Republican Minority Leader 12 just two years into his time in the House of Delegates. He served for two terms and left 13 West Virginia politics to focus on his fledgling real estate and construction business; and 14 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones had many passions, but his dream was to 15 breed and raise Thoroughbred horses. His pursuit of this dream led him to visit Kentucky 16 and Keeneland racetrack, where he met his wife, Elizabeth Lloyd; and 17 WHEREAS, after moving to Kentucky, Brereton Chandler Jones immersed himself 18 in civic activities, focusing on improving public education and increasing access to 19 healthcare; and 20 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones was a staunch supporter of the Prichard 21 Committee for Academic Excellence and served on the University of Kentucky Board of 22 Trustees. He also served on the UK Chandler Medical Center Board and as fundraising 23 chair for the UK Markey Cancer Foundation; and 24 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones was drawn back into politics by his desire to 25 help others and propel his causes of education and healthcare. As a Democrat, he was 26 elected to serve as the 50th Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1987 to 1991, and 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 806 Page 2 of 3 XXXX 11/2/2023 10:41 AM Jacketed went on to serve as the 58th Governor of Kentucky from 1991 to 1995; and 1 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones signed the most sweeping ethics reform 2 measures in Kentucky history. He subsequently called for legislation that expanded these 3 changes and signed laws that made the executive and legislative branches of government 4 more transparent and accountable to the people; and 5 WHEREAS, after completing service as Governor, Brereton Chandler Jones turned 6 his focus back to his family and his passion for raising Thoroughbreds. He built Airdrie 7 Stud and watched it grow into an internationally renowned Thoroughbred farm; and 8 WHEREAS, Airdrie Stud consists of more than 2,500 acres near Midway, 9 Kentucky. Much of this land is part of the famed Woodburn Stud, which was home to the 10 immortal Lexington during his 16-year reign as America's leading sire in the 19th 11 century. Woodburn was also the home of five Kentucky Derby winners and is known as 12 the birthplace of Kentucky's Thoroughbred industry. The property had not been used for 13 breeding for 70 years prior to the creation of Airdrie Stud; and 14 WHEREAS, horses bred at Airdrie have earned over $115 million in purse money 15 since 2000. They have also raced in the Kentucky Derby, won three Kentucky Oaks, and 16 24 Grade 1 stakes races; and 17 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones was committed not only to Airdrie, but also 18 to the Thoroughbred industry as a whole. He was a founding member of the Kentucky 19 Equine Education Project and the Breeders' Cup, where he served as chair and treasurer, 20 respectively; and 21 WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones was the recipient of the inaugural Industry 22 Vision Award for his significant contributions to Kentucky's horse racing industry in 23 October, 2016; and 24 WHEREAS, in his later years, Brereton Chandler Jones cherished time with his 25 beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. He took tremendous pleasure in attending his 26 grandsons' sporting events; and 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 806 Page 3 of 3 XXXX 11/2/2023 10:41 AM Jacketed WHEREAS, Brereton Chandler Jones is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Lloyd 1 Jones; his children, Lucy Simms Jones and Brereton (Bret) Chandler Jones, Jr.; his 2 daughter-in law, Tyler Bell Jones; and his grandchildren, James Brereton Jones, John 3 Lloyd Jones, Thomas Chandler Jones, and Wende Elizabeth Jones; 4 NOW, THEREFORE, 5 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 6 Kentucky: 7 Section 1. The members of the Senate do hereby honor the life and 8 accomplishments of former Kentucky Governor Brereton Chandler Jones and 9 posthumously recognize him for his dedication to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and 10 its citizens. 11 Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 12 Resolution to Brereton (Bret) Chandler Jones, Jr., at 2641 Old Frankfort Pike, Midway, 13 KY 40347. 14
