A RESOLUTION declaring August 2024 as Railroad Crossings Safety Awareness 1
Month in Kentucky. 2
WHEREAS, rail travel is an essential part of our transportation infrastructure, 3
reducing congestion on the roads and in the skies, and connecting cities and rural 4
communities; and 5
WHEREAS, projections of the United States Department of Transportation show 6
substantial increases in rail transport over the next three decades; and 7
WHEREAS, in the United States, due to increased rail traffic, there has been a 8
correlating increase in railroad crossing accidents involving persons and vehicles; and 9
WHEREAS, the Federal Railroad Administration reported that Kentucky has had 10
53 highway-rail grade crossing accidents this year, resulting in several injuries and 11
fatalities; and 12
WHEREAS, collisions between trains and motor vehicles or pedestrians can be 13
prevented by increased public awareness of the dangers at crossings and around railroad 14
property; and 15
WHEREAS, Kentucky Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit public safety and 16
education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities, and 17
injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and near railroad tracks; and 18
WHEREAS, city, county, and school officials are encouraged to promote public 19
awareness of rail crossing safety throughout the year; and 20
WHEREAS, city and county governments are encouraged to make every effort to 21
increase safety by removing vegetation that obstructs the warning signage and the 22
sightlines of motorists approaching rail crossings; and 23
WHEREAS, during Railroad Crossings Safety Awareness Month in Kentucky all 24
citizens are encouraged to observe added caution for motorists or pedestrians around 25
tracks or trains; 26

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 1
Kentucky: 2
Section 1. This honorable body declares August 2024 to be Railroad Crossings 3
Safety Awareness Month in Kentucky. 4
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 5
Resolution to Senator Matthew Deneen. 6
