UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1363 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 1/10/2024 1:20 PM Jacketed A RESOLUTION designating January 11, 2024, as Human Trafficking Awareness 1 Day. 2 WHEREAS, the International Labour Organization estimates that there are more 3 than 27 million victims of human trafficking worldwide, with hundreds of thousands of 4 victims living in the United States, and of which more than half are women and children; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, those who are trafficked and exploited in the United States are entitled 7 the foundational value that all are created equal and have unalienable rights to life, 8 liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and 9 WHEREAS, victims of human trafficking live in fear and are often kept isolated, 10 unaware of their rights, powerless to access services, and afraid to ask for help from local 11 law enforcement; and 12 WHEREAS, in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, human trafficking has been 13 addressed by many different agencies and organizations, including the Kentucky 14 Statewide Human Trafficking Task Force, which was created with the implementation of 15 the Human Trafficking Victims' Rights Act in 2013; and 16 WHEREAS, combating human trafficking requires a collaborative, comprehensive 17 approach across all levels of government, and requires vigilance from the general public; 18 and 19 WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Kentucky recognizes the many organizations 20 and ministries that exist to combat human trafficking and offer supportive measures to 21 victims of human trafficking and exploitation; and 22 WHEREAS, to this end, National Human Trafficking Awareness Day was 23 designated by the United States Congress in 2007, and has served as a reminder to all 24 citizens that human trafficking remains a vital issue that deserves every available 25 resource to stop; 26 NOW, THEREFORE, 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1363 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 1/10/2024 1:20 PM Jacketed Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 1 Kentucky: 2 Section 1. The members of the Senate hereby designate January 11, 2024, as 3 Human Trafficking Awareness Day. 4 Section 2. The members recognize the importance of assisting the victims of 5 human trafficking, fighting human trafficking across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, 6 and helping recovering victims to be accepted back into their communities. 7 Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 8 Resolution to Senator Lindsey Tichenor, Senator David Yates, Attorney General Russell 9 Coleman, The Institute for Shelter Care, and Slavery No More. 10
