A RESOLUTION recognizing May 2025 as Myositis Awareness Month. 1
WHEREAS, residents of Kentucky are among those affected by myositis and other 2
rare diseases because nearly 1 in 10 Americans have rare diseases; and 3
WHEREAS, idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (collectively referred to as 4
myositis) are rare, chronic, autoimmune muscle wasting diseases; and 5
WHEREAS, myositis often features debilitating muscle inflammation and other 6
symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, and trouble swallowing; and 7
WHEREAS, myositis can result in myositis-associated interstitial lung disease; and 8
WHEREAS, more research is needed to identify the causes and modes of 9
treatments for the myositis group of diseases, which include anti-MDA5 autoantibody 10
positive myositis, antisynthetase syndrome, dermatomyositis, juvenile dermatomyositis, 11
immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, inclusion body myositis, and polymyositis; and 12
WHEREAS, myositis is difficult to diagnose, treatment is often delayed, and 13
individuals generally experience difficulty finding a health care provider with expertise in 14
their condition; and 15
WHEREAS, individuals who suffer with myositis experience reduced quality of 16
life, especially as no cure has been found and life expectancy is shortened, particularly 17
for those with inclusion body myositis; and 18
WHEREAS, women and people of color with all forms of myositis experience 19
particularly pronounced health disparities; and 20
WHEREAS, The Myositis Association is the leading international patient advocacy 21
organization serving the myositis community and focuses on patient services, education, 22
research, and public awareness, toward its goal of achieving a world without myositis; 23
and 24
WHEREAS, The Myositis Association is organizing a nationwide observance of 25
Myositis Awareness Month in May, 2025; 26

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 1
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 2
Section 1. This honorable body hereby recognizes May 2025 as Myositis 3
Awareness Month. 4
Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 5
copy of this Resolution to Representative Kimberly Moser. 6
