A RESOLUTION recognizing Saturday, March 8, 2025, as International Women's 1 
Day. 2 
WHEREAS, in March 1977, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 3 
March 8 as International Women's Day; and 4 
WHEREAS, for more than four decades, International Women's Day has served as 5 
a day of celebration for the profound accomplishments of women across the world; and 6 
WHEREAS, International Women's Day also affirms that the more than three 7 
billion women around the world have fundamental rights, participate in the political, 8 
social, and economic lives of their communities, play a critical role in providing and 9 
caring for their families, and contribute substantially to the economic growth of their 10 
communities; and 11 
WHEREAS, the 2025 campaign theme for International Women's Day is 12 
"Accelerate Action," which emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps 13 
to achieve gender equality and calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing 14 
the systematic barriers and biases that women face; and 15 
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that all citizens in this Commonwealth acknowledge 16 
the profound place women have in the overall vitality of Kentucky's economy, its culture, 17 
and the education of its youth; and 18 
WHEREAS, women have proven time and time again that they are leaders, and 19 
they continue to exhibit excellence in their various leadership roles across the world, 20 
including in this Commonwealth; and 21 
WHEREAS, in 1921, this Commonwealth elected Mary Elliott Flanery to the 22 
Kentucky General Assembly. Not only did she become the first woman ever elected to 23 
the Kentucky House of Representatives, she also became the first woman elected to any 24 
state legislature south of the Mason-Dixon line; and 25 
WHEREAS, women around the world remain vastly underrepresented in 26 
government positions, and 2024 data showed that women account for only 25.6 percent 27  UNOFFICIAL COPY  	25 RS BR 2018

of national parliamentarians and 21 percent of government ministers; and 1 
WHEREAS, the ability of women and girls to realize their full potential is critical 2 
to the ability of a country to achieve strong and lasting economic growth, self-reliance, 3 
and political and social stability; and 4 
WHEREAS, this honorable body rightfully applauds the women of this 5 
Commonwealth, and duly thanks them for all they do to ensure Kentucky's success; and 6 
WHEREAS, this body also commends those women whose past efforts paved the 7 
way for those who now benefit from their sacrifice, their courage, and their vision, 8 
including women in this chamber; 9 
NOW, THEREFORE, 10 
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 11 
Kentucky: 12 
Section 1. The members of the Senate, both individually and collectively, 13 
hereby recognize Saturday, March 8, 2025, as International Women's Day. 14 
Section 2. The members of the Senate recognize that the empowerment of 15 
women is deeply linked to the potential of this Commonwealth to generate economic 16 
growth and true inclusivity for all. 17 
Section 3. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of 18 
International Women's Day. 19 
Section 4.   The Clerk of the Senate shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to 20 
Senator Cassie Chambers Armstrong. 21
