A RESOLUTION commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the 1
United States Navy. 2
WHEREAS, in August of 1775, delegates from Rhode Island entreated the 3
Continental Congress to request a fleet of ships be established to protect the colonies; and 4
WHEREAS, on October 13, 1775, the recognized date of the founding of the 5
United States Navy, the Continental Congress agreed with the request and formed an 6
advisory committee that went on to supply George Washington with an armed schooner 7
and a sloop. Connecticut and Rhode Island similarly armed merchant vessels to monitor 8
the Atlantic waters near their states; and 9
WHEREAS, the colonies began to build up the burgeoning navy which would 10
become instrumental when England declared the colonies to be in rebellion in November 11
of 1775; and 12
WHEREAS, from these humble origins of making due, the United States Navy has 13
emerged as the most formidable naval force in the world; and 14
WHEREAS, the United States Navy has been employed with success in the 15
American Revolution, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, 16
Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi 17
Freedom; and 18
WHEREAS, the men and women of the United States Navy are consummate 19
professionals, and those in vessels serve in particularly harsh environments, for if the 20
vessel is lost, their lives are in grave jeopardy of being forfeit, yet all serve and offer their 21
lives in service; and 22
WHEREAS, the presence of United States Navy vessels constitutes a projection of 23
American might that has preserved this American way of life for the citizens of the 24
United States of America and its allies; 25
NOW, THEREFORE, 26

Section 1. This august body commemorates the 250th anniversary of the 2
founding of the United States Navy and acknowledges the critical role it plays in the 3
defense of this Commonwealth and its parent nation and in preserving the lives and 4
liberties of the citizenry. 5
Section 2. This august body further recognizes the sacrifices of the men and 6
women of the United States Navy have made from the earliest stirrings of the American 7
Revolution to the present engagements involving naval forces so that we, as a nation and 8
a Commonwealth, may live in peace. 9
