UNOFFICIAL COPY 25 RS BR 1158 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/4/2025 8:02 AM Jacketed A RESOLUTION commemorating Senator Keturah Herron on being the second 1 African American woman to serve in the Kentucky Senate. 2 WHEREAS, it is fitting for this body to honor historic achievements made by 3 Kentuckians, whether in public service or for the greater good of our communities and 4 our Commonwealth; and 5 WHEREAS, the contributions made by African Americans to the General 6 Assembly have been well-established, and the accomplishments of African Americans to 7 this Commonwealth in the arenas of medicine, law, art, commerce, and education have 8 helped shape Kentucky, both before the Civil Rights movement and afterward; and 9 WHEREAS, although there has been a total of 36 African American legislators in 10 the Kentucky General Assembly since 1900, only two African American women have 11 served in the Kentucky Senate. Senator Georgia M. Powers served from 1968 to 1989 12 and Senator Keturah Herron began her tenure in 2025; and 13 WHEREAS, the many and lasting contributions of the African American members 14 of the General Assembly do not go unnoticed by Kentuckians, as they have done and 15 continue to do good work not only for this Commonwealth but for generations of African 16 Americans who will grow up learning about the standards these legislators so 17 courageously set inside these chambers; and 18 WHEREAS, Senator Keturah Herron was a valued member of the Kentucky House 19 of Representatives from 2022 to 2024 representing the 42nd District and now represents 20 the 35th Senate District; and 21 WHEREAS, Senator Herron is a graduate of the University of Louisville and 22 Eastern Kentucky University; and 23 WHEREAS, Senator Herron is an outspoken advocate for the constituents of the 24 35th Senate District and for the rights of minorities across the Commonwealth and the 25 nation, and serves with integrity and humility; and 26 WHEREAS, the members of this august body rightfully take the time to 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 25 RS BR 1158 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/4/2025 8:02 AM Jacketed congratulate Senator Keturah Herron upon this historic occasion; and 1 WHEREAS, the success of this Commonwealth has always rested on its 2 acknowledgement and support of all its outstanding citizens; and 3 WHEREAS, the historic importance of the second African American woman 4 serving in this body is celebrated by all Kentuckians as a symbol of the shining 5 possibility that was spoken of during Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous rally 6 outside the walls of this institution more than a half century ago; 7 NOW, THEREFORE, 8 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 9 Kentucky: 10 Section 1. This honorable body does hereby express its profound admiration for 11 Senator Keturah Herron for being the second African American woman to serve in the 12 Kentucky Senate and marks this day of the 2025 Regular Session as a landmark in this 13 Commonwealth's glorious history. 14 Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in rightful honor and 15 commemoration of Senator Keturah Herron. 16 Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 17 Resolution to Senator Keturah Herron. 18
