Jane Smith	HB No. 1077
Abstract: Provides that the director of the division of administrative law shall be appointed
by the chief justice of the supreme court instead of the governor.
Present law provides for the division of administrative law and provides for the director of
the division. Provides that the director is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the
Senate for a six-year term. Requires the director to be a resident of Louisiana; be licensed
to practice law in Louisiana; and have been engaged in the actual practice of law for at least
five years prior to his appointment. Provides that the director is a full-time unclassified
employee and prohibits the director from accepting or engaging in additional employment
of any kind. Provides that a vacancy is filled by appointment for the remainder of the term.
Proposed law provides instead that the director is appointed by the chief justice of the
supreme court subject to confirmation by the Senate and otherwise retains present law.
Proposed law specifies that the provisions of proposed law shall not affect the term of office
of the person holding the office of director of the division of administrative law on the
effective date of proposed law.
(Amends R.S. 49:995(A) and (B)(2))
