LICENSING:  Provides for licensure of radiology practitioner assistants
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 37:3200(2)(introductory paragraph), 3207(B)(1),2
3208(A)(introductory paragraph), 3211, 3212, 3213, 3214(introductory paragraph),3
3216, 3219(A)(introductory paragraph) and (4) and to enact R.S. 37:3200(11) and4
(12), 3207(A)(8), 3208.1, 3210(E), 3211.1, and 3212.1, relative to licensing of5
radiology practitioner assistants; to provide for qualifications of radiology6
practitioner assistants; to provide for licensing requirements for radiology7
practitioner assistants; and to provide for related matters.8
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:9
Section 1.  R.S. 37:3200(2)(introductory paragraph), 3207(B)(1),10
3208(A)(introductory paragraph),  3211, 3212, 3213, 3214(introductory paragraph), 3216,11
3219(A)(introductory paragraph) and (4) are hereby amended and reenacted and R.S.12
37:3200(11) and (12), 3207(A)(8), 3208.1, 3210(E), 3211.1, and 3212.1 are hereby enacted13
to read as follows:14
CHAPTER 45.  LICENSED RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST AND LICENSED15
RADIOLOGY PRACTITIONER ASSISTANT16
§3200.  Definitions17
As used in this Chapter:18

(2) "License" means a certificate issued by the board authorizing the licensee20
to use radioactive materials or equipment emitting or detecting ionizing radiation on21

this Chapter. engage in one of the following sets of activities, as appropriate to the1
licensee specified:2
(a) A licensed radiologic technologist may use radioactive materials or3
equipment emitting or detecting ionizing radiation on humans for diagnostic or4
therapeutic purposes in accordance with the provisions of this Chapter.5
(b) A licensed radiology practitioner assistant may provide radiologic6
diagnostic medical services under the supervision of a radiologist.7

(11) "Radiology practitioner assistant" means a health professional who is9
certified and registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and10
who is credentialed to provide primary radiologic health care under the supervision11
of a radiologist.12
(12) "Supervising radiologist" means a radiologist overseeing or13
participating in the work of a radiology practitioner assistant.14

§3207.  Duties and powers of the board 16
A.  The board shall: 17

(8) Examine, license, renew licenses of, and issue temporary working19
permits to duly qualified applicants for licensure as radiology practitioner assistants.20
B.  The board may: 21
(1) Establish pursuant to the Administrative Procedure Act a code of ethics22
for radiologic technologists and radiology practitioner assistants.23

§3208.  Qualifications of applicants for radiologic technologist license25
A. An applicant for licensure as a radiologic technologist under the26
provisions of this Chapter must shall verify by oath or affirmation that he is: 27

A. An applicant for licensure pursuant to the provisions of this Chapter shall1
verify by oath or affirmation that he is: 2
(1)  At least eighteen years of age.3
(2) Has successfully completed a four-year course of study in a secondary4
school approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, passed5
an approved equivalency test, or has graduated from a secondary school outside6
Louisiana having comparable approval.7
B.  Each applicant for a license as a radiology practitioner assistant shall:8
(1)  Be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.9
(2) Possess valid and current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.10

E. The provisions of this Section shall apply only to radiologic technologists.14

§3211.  Licensure of radiologic technologists16
The board shall issue a license to each applicant who has successfully passed17
the board examination or has otherwise been qualified under pursuant to the18
provisions of this Chapter and authorize the use of the title "Licensed Radiologic19
Technologist".  20
§3211.1.  Licensure of radiology practitioner assistants21
The board shall issue a license to each applicant who is qualified pursuant to22
the provisions of this Chapter and authorize the use of the title "Licensed Radiology23
Practitioner Assistant". 24
§3212.  Licensing of radiologic technologists by reciprocity 25

that the standards under which they were licensed are at least as stringent as those1
established by the board.2
§3213.  Necessity of license of radiologic technologists; prohibited acts 3

§3216.  Reinstatement of license 8
A radiologic technologist Every person whose license has lapsed and who has9
ceased activities as a radiologic technologist in his profession for not more than five10
years may have his license reinstated upon payment of the renewal fee as provided11
for in R.S. 37:3218 and upon submission of evidence satisfactory to the board that12
he has fulfilled continuing education requirements as promulgated by the board.  13

§3219. Discipline; causes for censure, reprimand, suspension or revocation of15
license 16
A. The board may suspend or revoke any license to practice as a radiologic17
technologist or a radiology practitioner assistant or censure, reprimand, or otherwise18
discipline a licensee upon proof that the person: 19

(4) Has aided and abetted a person who is not a licensed radiologic21
technologist or radiology practitioner assistant or otherwise authorized by this22
Chapter to perform the duties of a license holder.  23

Abstract: Provides for licensure of radiology practitioner assistants.
Present law provides for a definition of "license".
Proposed law changes present law to provide that "license" means a certificate issued by the
Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners ("board") authorizing the licensee to engage in
practice as a radiologic technologist and radiology practitioner assistant.
Proposed law provides for the definitions of "radiology practitioner assistant" and
"supervising radiologist".
Proposed law allows the board to examine, license, renew licenses of, and issue temporary
working permits to duly qualified applicants for licensure as radiology practitioner
assistants.
Present law allows the board to establish a code of ethics for radiologic technologists.
Proposed law retains present law but includes radiology practitioner assistants.
Proposed law provides that qualifications for a radiology practitioner assistant be as follows:
(1)At least 18 years of age.
 
(2)Has successfully completed a four-year course of study in a secondary school
approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, passed an
approved equivalency test, or have graduated from a secondary school outside
Louisiana having comparable approval.
Proposed law provides that each applicant for a license as a radiology practitioner assistant
shall be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and possess
valid and current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Proposed law authorizes the board to issue a license to each applicant who is qualified and
authorize the use of the title "Licensed Radiology Practitioner Assistant".
Proposed law authorizes the board to issue a license without examination to persons who are
licensed as radiology practitioner assistants under the laws of other states provided that the
standards under which they were licensed are at least as stringent as those established by the
board.
Present law provides for discipline of radiologic technologist by the board.
Proposed law retains present law but includes discipline of radiology practitioner assistants.
