HOUSE BILL NO. 1348

CURRICULA:  Provides relative to required physical education for high school students
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 17:264, relative to required physical activity for students; to require2
instruction in physical education as a prerequisite to high school graduation; to3
provide for effectiveness; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 17:264 is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6
ยง264.  Physical education; required instruction7
A. Effective for the 2011-2012 school year and continuing thereafter,8
notwithstanding any rule or regulation to the contrary, all public high schools shall9
give instruction in physical education as a prerequisite to graduation.10
(1) For the 2011-2012 school year, instruction shall be required for ninth11
grade students.12
(2) For the 2012-2013 school year, instruction shall be required for ninth and13
tenth grade students.14
(3) For the 2013-2014 school year and continuing thereafter, instruction shall15
be required for ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students.16
B. The State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education shall prescribe17
suitable teaching materials for the instruction, which shall be given in accordance18
with the course of study prescribed by the state board, as follows:19
(1)  Instruction shall be equal to three units of credit.20 HLS 10RS-2716	ORIGINAL

(2)  Instruction shall be given for at least thirty minutes, at least three times1
per week.2
(3)  Instruction shall include exercises which build both cardiovascular and3
musculoskeletal strength.4

Abstract: Requires instruction in physical education as a prerequisite to high school
graduation beginning with the 2011-12 school year.
Proposed law requires, beginning with the 2011-12 school year, each public high school to
give instruction in physical education as a prerequisite to graduation.  Requires BESE to
prescribe suitable teaching materials for the instruction, which shall be given according to
a BESE-prescribed course of study, as follows:
(1)Instruction shall be equal to three units of credit.
(2)Instruction shall be given for at least 30 minutes, at least three times per week.
(3)Instruction shall include exercises which build both cardiovascular and
musculoskeletal strength.
Proposed law shall be required as follows for students in the following grades:
(1) 2011-12 school year: Ninth grade.
(2)2012-13 school year: Ninth and 10th grades.
(3)2013-14 school year and continuing thereafter: Ninth, 10th, and 11th grades.
