Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE BILL NO. 445 BY REPRESENTATIVE ROSALIND JONES COURTS/CITY: Increases the civil jurisdictional amount for the City Court of Monroe AN ACT1 To amend and reenact Code of Civil Procedure Article 4843(E) and (H), relative to city2 courts; to increase the jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Monroe;3 and to provide for related matters.4 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5 Section 1. Code of Civil Procedure Article 4843(E) and (H) are hereby amended and6 reenacted to read as follows: 7 Art. 4843. City court jurisdiction; amount in dispute; injunctive actions by state or8 political subdivision9 * * *10 E. In the City Court of Alexandria, the City Court of Monroe, and the City1 Court of Pineville, the civil jurisdiction is concurrent with the district court in cases2 where the amount in dispute, or the value of the property involved, does not exceed3 the amount provided in Article 1732(1) for purposes of demanding a jury trial.4 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services. Present law provides that the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Monroe is $25,000. Proposed law provides that the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Monroe is an amount not to exceed the minimum amount necessary to give a right to a jury trial. Proposed law retains present law (C.C.P. Art. 1732(1)) which provides that a jury trial shall not be available in a suit where the amount of no individual petitioner's cause of action exceeds $50,000 exclusive of interest and costs.
