BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHMOND
ELECTIONS/COMMISSIONERS:  Provides relative to commissioners serving at a polling
place on election day
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 18:425(C)(3), relative to election commissioners; to provide that the clerk of2
court may determine whether and how commissioners will be allowed to take3
periodic breaks and leave the polling place for meals on election day; and to provide4
for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 18:425(C)(3) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7

Abstract: Provides that the clerk of court may determine whether and how commissioners
will be allowed to take periodic breaks and leave the polling place for meals on
election day.
Present law (R.S. 18:541) provides that in primary and general elections, the polls shall open
at 6:00 a.m. on election day and shall close at 8:00 p.m. on election day.
Present law (R.S. 18:425) provides that election commissioners shall conduct primary and
general elections at each polling place, shall enforce the election laws, and shall maintain
order at the polling place during the election and the counting and tabulation of votes.
Provides for qualifications, training, powers, and duties of commissioners.
Proposed law retains present law and additionally provides that the clerk of court may
determine whether and how commissioners will be allowed to take periodic breaks and leave
the polling place for meals on election day.
