MTR VEHICLE/INSPECTION:  Increases motor vehicle inspection fees
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 32:1306(C)(2), relative to motor vehicle inspections; to provide2
for distribution of motor vehicle inspection fees; and to provide for related matters.3
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:4
Section 1. R.S. 32:1306(C)(2) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:5

(2) Except as otherwise provided in this Subsection, an annual charge or fee10
of ten dollars shall be charged for each certificate of inspection and approval issued,11
four dollars and seventy-five cents eight dollars of which shall be retained by the12
operator of the motor vehicle inspection station conducting the inspection, four13
dollars one dollar of which shall be transferred to the office of state police for use in14
traffic law enforcement, and one dollar and twenty-five cents one dollar shall be15
transferred to the office of motor vehicles for expenses associated with the motor16
vehicle inspection and financial responsibility programs. Included in the inspection17
shall be the adjustment of headlights when needed and mechanically practical, at no18
additional cost to the operator of the motor vehicle inspected. 19

Section 2. The Legislature of Louisiana hereby declares that inspection stations are1
entitled to cover the costs associated with conducting motor vehicle inspections. The general2
motor vehicle inspection fee was changed from five dollars to ten dollars in 1988, but only3
one additional dollar of the five-dollar increase goes to the station operator. The time has4
come to change the distribution of the motor vehicle inspection fee in order to cover the cost5
borne by the station operator for conducting the inspection.6

Abstract: Changes distribution of motor vehicle inspection fee.
Present law provides that an annual charge of $10 is charged for motor vehicle inspections
with $4.75 of that charge being retained by the station operator that conducts the inspection,
$4 of that charge being retained by the office of state police, and $1.25 of that charge being
retained by the office of motor vehicles.
Proposed law provides that an annual charge of $10 is charged for motor vehicle inspections
with $8 of that charge being retained by the station operator that conducts the inspection, $1
of that charge being retained by the office of state police, and $1 of that charge being
retained by the office of motor vehicles.
