HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 227
BY REPRESENTATIVES PATRICIA SMITH, ROSALIND JONES, AND STIAES
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To recognize Tuesday, June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the capitol and to commend the
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated, for their outstanding community service and to recognize Tuesday,
June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the capitol; and 
WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority has the distinction of being the first sorority established by African
American college women; and 
WHEREAS, throughout the past one hundred two years, Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority has expanded internationally to more than eight hundred fifty chapters; and 
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-one of these chapters, which are
located on college and university campuses and have active alumnae groups in communities
throughout the state; and 
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is committed to community service and
actively contributes to the educational, civic, and social life of Louisiana's citizens; and 
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters encourage their members to become
involved and committed community volunteers in one of their primary service components,
including education, health, the economy, the arts, and the family; and
WHEREAS, state representatives Rosalind Jones, Charmaine Marchand Stiaes, and
Patricia Smith are proud AKA alumnae; and
WHEREAS, AKA Day at the capitol is a national program through which members
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority throughout the nation meet with their legislators to address
issues that are pertinent to their communities.  ENROLLEDHCR NO. 227

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the
Louisiana State Capitol and does hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous honor and pride
that they bring to their family, friends, and communities, the state of Louisiana, and the
United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
