A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend Charlie Smith upon his induction into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame in
February of 2011.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Charlie Smith upon his induction into the
Louisiana Political Hall of Fame in February of 2011; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame selection committee bases its
selection on the impact that an individual has had on the politics of Louisiana, and that of
Charlie Smith has certainly been extraordinary; and
WHEREAS, born in Mobile, Alabama, Charlie Smith's family moved to Louisiana
when he was a child; he graduated from Slidell High School, attended and edited the campus
newspaper at Southeastern Louisiana College, and graduated in 1965 with a degree in
journalism from Louisiana State University, where he was president of the Young
Democrats and a regular speaker at Free Speech Alley; and
WHEREAS, since the beginning of his distinguished lobbying career in 1968,
Charlie Smith has worked with seven governors, John McKeithen, Edwin Edwards, Dave
Treen, Buddy Roemer, Mike Foster, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, and Bobby Jindal, and he
is widely regarded as one of the most expert and effective lobbyists in Louisiana history; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 268

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was an early leader in some of the most spirited debates in
Louisiana's political history and has been a principal proponent of landmark reform
legislation that has had a significant impact on the political landscape of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith is considered an expert in many areas, including legislative
history and political strategy, and is a powerful ally for issues he supports, such as those
related to workers' rights, the arts, and the environment, and is a formidable adversary with
respect to any issue he opposes; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his many professional achievements, Mr. Smith is the
proud father of Kimberly, Tracy Donovan, and Cristina Noel and a talented poet, playwright,
novelist, storyteller, humorist, and historian; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith's induction into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame is a
source of deep pride for his family as well as for all of the friends he has made at the state
capitol during more than forty years of dedicated and highly effective service to the clients
fortunate enough to be represented by an individual of such passion, intelligence, and
integrity; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Smith is a rare Louisiana treasure who undoubtedly merits
induction into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame, and members of the legislature are proud
to join him in celebrating this prestigious honor that he so richly deserves.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Charlie Smith upon his induction into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame in
February of 2011, does hereby recognize and record for posterity his myriad achievements,
does hereby express sincere appreciation for his singular contributions to the legislative
process as a truly exceptional lobbyist for more than four decades, and does hereby extend
to him every good wish for continued success and happiness in his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Charlie Smith.
