BY REPRESENTATIVE PUGH
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana.2
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the Elmer's Candy Company and to3
recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana; and4
WHEREAS, the Elmer's Candy Company has a rich history that dates back to 18555
when Christopher Henry Miller used his experience as a pastry chef to open the Miller6
Candy Company in New Orleans; and7
WHEREAS, Augustus Elmer, Christopher Henry Miller's son-in-law, eventually8
joined the candy company, and its name was changed to the Elmer-Miller Candy Company9
around the turn of the century; and10
WHEREAS, in 1914, the company underwent a third and final name change after11
Augustus Elmer's sons joined what is now the Elmer's Candy Company; and12
WHEREAS, Augustus Elmer's sons increased the company's national presence by13
adding several new factories and introducing a wide variety of confections and snacks; and14
WHEREAS, created in 1923 and 1936, respectively, Heavenly Hash Eggs and Gold15
Brick Eggs have become a popular treat, especially throughout the Easter season; and16
WHEREAS, Roy Nelson became a partner in Elmer's in the early 1960s, and in 1963,17
he purchased the entire company from the Elmer family and encouraged his son Allan to join18

WHEREAS, together, Roy and Allan Nelson centralized operations by opening a1
manufacturing facility in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, and refocused the company's offerings by2
concentrating on seasonal chocolates rather than everyday candy and snacks; and3
WHEREAS, today, Elmer's Candy is run by the third generation of the Nelson family4
and is the second largest heart box manufacturer in the country; and5
WHEREAS, Elmer's Gold Brick, Heavenly Hash, and Pecan Eggs outsell national6
leaders five to one along the Gulf Coast; and7
WHEREAS, the Elmer's Candy Company merits a sincere and heartfelt measure of8
commendation for its contributions to Louisiana's culture and economy.9
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby10
recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day and does hereby commend the11
Elmer's Candy Company for its manifold contributions to the state of Louisiana throughout12
its long and illustrious history.13
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted14
to the Nelson family of the Elmer's Candy Company.15
