ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 43 BY REPRESENTATIVE PUGH A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana. WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the Elmer's Candy Company and to recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, the Elmer's Candy Company has a rich history that dates back to 1855 when Christopher Henry Miller used his experience as a pastry chef to open the Miller Candy Company in New Orleans; and WHEREAS, Augustus Elmer, Christopher Henry Miller's son-in-law, eventually joined the candy company, and its name was changed to the Elmer-Miller Candy Company around the turn of the century; and WHEREAS, in 1914, the company underwent a third and final name change after Augustus Elmer's sons joined what is now the Elmer's Candy Company; and WHEREAS, Augustus Elmer's sons increased the company's national presence by adding several new factories and introducing a wide variety of confections and snacks; and WHEREAS, created in 1923 and 1936, respectively, Heavenly Hash Eggs and Gold Brick Eggs have become a popular treat, especially throughout the Easter season; and WHEREAS, Roy Nelson became a partner in Elmer's in the early 1960s, and in 1963, he purchased the entire company from the Elmer family and encouraged his son Allan to join in this endeavor; and WHEREAS, together, Roy and Allan Nelson centralized operations by opening a manufacturing facility in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, and refocused the company's offerings by concentrating on seasonal chocolates rather than everyday candy and snacks; and WHEREAS, today, Elmer's Candy is run by the third generation of the Nelson family and is the second largest heart box manufacturer in the country; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 43 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Elmer's Gold Brick, Heavenly Hash, and Pecan Eggs outsell national leaders five to one along the Gulf Coast; and WHEREAS, the Elmer's Candy Company merits a sincere and heartfelt measure of commendation for its contributions to Louisiana's culture and economy. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Elmer's Candy Day and does hereby commend the Elmer's Candy Company for its manifold contributions to the state of Louisiana throughout its long and illustrious history.
