HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 86
BY REPRESENTATIVE EDWARDS
VETERANS: Directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to distribute medals to recipients
in the manner requested by the recipient
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To direct the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs to distribute Veterans' Honor2
Medals to recipients in the manner requested by the recipient.3
WHEREAS, Act No. 695 of the 2008 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature4
established the Louisiana Veterans' Honor Medal Program to recognize and honor all5
Louisiana veterans for their service to our country; and6
WHEREAS, more than eight thousand Louisiana veterans have received the honor7
medal since the program was created; and8
WHEREAS, since the inception of the program, honor medals have been presented9
by Governor Bobby Jindal during ceremonies held across the state; and 10
WHEREAS, although it is an enormous honor to receive the honor medal from the11
governor personally, many veterans who are entitled to and have applied for an honor medal12
do not wish to wait for such a ceremony and would prefer instead to receive the medals as13
soon as possible; and14
WHEREAS, many of Louisiana's heroic veterans of World War II are passing away15
every day, and those remaining deserve to receive the honor medal to which they are entitled16
as soon as possible and without delay; and17
WHEREAS, many Louisiana veterans are not able or do not wish to travel the18
distances required to attend honor medal ceremonies with the governor.19
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby20
direct the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs to provide an option on all applications21 HLS 10RS-1381	ORIGINAL

for the Veterans' Honor Medal for the veteran to indicate his preference to receive the honor1
medal either in a ceremony with the governor or to receive the medal in the mail2
expeditiously with the option to participate in a ceremony with or without the governor at3
a later date.4
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs5
shall honor the preferences made by veterans concerning the manner and time frame in6
which the Veterans' Honor Medal is presented to him.7
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any veteran who is currently waiting to receive8
a honor medal may contact the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs to request that the9
medal be mailed to his mailing address, and that the Louisiana Department of Veterans10
Affairs shall honor these requests as soon as possible.11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted12
to the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs.13
