Public Broadcasting channels A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To urge and request all cable and satellite television providers serving the citizens of2 Louisiana to provide access to all three Louisiana Public Broadcasting channels to3 their customers.4 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) has been providing quality5 educational and informative programming to the people of Louisiana since 1975; and 6 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting has produced thousands of hours of local7 programming that celebrates the people, the history, the culture, and the achievements of8 Louisiana; and9 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting, as the only media outlet able to reach10 all of Louisiana, has demonstrated itself essential to the people of Louisiana in times of11 natural disasters by providing emergency broadcasts; and12 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting has grown from a single television13 channel to three television channels, LPB, LPB2, and LPB3, each broadcasting twenty-four14 hours a day, seven days a week; and15 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting is a high-definition channel offering16 programs from the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and those produced locally; and 17 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting's online education website is accessed18 more than one million seven hundred thousand times a year where more than two thousand19 teachers are enrolled in professional development courses from LPB; and20 HLS 10RS-1586 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 99 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Louisiana Public Broadcasting's pre-school reading camps have shown1 proven increases in understanding letter sounds, spelling, word recognition, and reading;2 and3 WHEREAS, LPB2 provides educational children's programming in prime-time4 evening hours and all day Saturday and Sunday, and is the only television station providing5 regularly scheduled French-language programming; and6 WHEREAS, LPB3 presents lifelong learning programs including those that celebrate7 Louisiana's rich history and heritage; and 8 WHEREAS, thousands of Louisiana's citizens receive their television service from9 cable and satellite providers; and 10 WHEREAS, cable and satellite providers are offered all three Louisiana Public11 Broadcasting channels free of charge; and12 WHEREAS, it is in the public interest for all residents of Louisiana to have access13 to emergency information and educational, historical, and cultural programming. 14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15 urge and request all cable and satellite television providers serving the citizens of Louisiana16 to provide access to all three Louisiana Public Broadcasting channels to their customers.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted18 to every cable and satellite provider doing business in the state of Louisiana.19 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
