HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 101
BY REPRESENTATIVE HUTTER
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Elaine P. Nunez Community College administration, faculty, and staff for
their commitment and dedication to rebuild after the destruction caused by Hurricane
Katrina and to congratulate the Elaine P. Nunez Community College community
upon its eighteen-year anniversary.
WHEREAS, Elaine P. Nunez Community College is a unique institution of higher
learning with an equally unique history; and
WHEREAS, in 1992, the Louisiana Legislature passed Act No. 341, establishing the
Elaine P. Nunez Community College by merging the Elaine P. Nunez Technical Institute and
the St. Bernard Parish Community College; and
WHEREAS, in spring of 1993, Elaine P. Nunez Community College was accredited
by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and
WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, Nunez Community College and its entire service
area was struck by Hurricane Katrina; and
WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina was the greatest natural disaster to affect the United
States in recorded history; and
WHEREAS, St. Bernard Parish, the home parish of the Nunez campus, was almost
completely decimated, as it took a direct hit and suffered flood waters that in many areas did
not recede for weeks; and
WHEREAS, the first floor of every building on the Chalmette campus was flooded
more than seven feet; and
WHEREAS, despite dire predictions, and under the leadership of Chancellor Thomas
Warner, the Nunez Community College presented a fall mini-semester within weeks of the

WHEREAS, by the end of December 2005, the Facilities Department, along with
volunteer crews and others, gutted the first floors of the buildings; and
WHEREAS, they also had electricity, water, and sewer hook-ups in the Arts,
Sciences, and Technology Building; and 
WHEREAS, the Nunez Community College was fully reopened for business on
January 25, 2006. 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Elaine P. Nunez Community College
administration, Chancellor Thomas Warner, faculty, and staff for  their commitment and
dedication to rebuild after the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina and to congratulate
the Elaine P. Nunez Community College community upon its eighteen-year anniversary.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Elaine P. Nunez Community College Chancellor Thomas Warner.
